Oakwell is one of English football’s oldest and most historic grounds, home to Barnsley FC since 1888 – just a year after the club’s foundation. Located a short walk from Barnsley town centre in South Yorkshire, this 23,287-capacity stadium has witnessed over 135 years of footballing history. The historic Archibald Leitch-influenced West Stand, part of which dates to 1904, remains the ground’s oldest surviving structure, with original upper-tier seating from the late 19th century.
The modern East Stand (1993), South Stand and North Stand create an impressive bowl around it, giving Oakwell a fascinating blend of old and new. Oakwell was also the first stadium in English football to have a purpose-built dedicated stand for disabled supporters. The club and Barnsley Council announced a partnership in 2024, securing Oakwell as the club’s home for the next three decades, with planning permission secured in late 2025 for refreshed East and South Stand exteriors and a new main entrance.
Barnsley FC – The Tykes, or The Reds – are one of England’s most historic clubs, founded in 1887 by Reverend Tiverton Preedy as Barnsley St Peter’s. The club changed its name to Barnsley FC in 1897 and its colours from blue to red and white in 1904. Barnsley are founding members of the Football League Second Division (1898) and hold a unique distinction: they have spent more seasons and played more games at the second tier of English football than any other club in history.
The club’s greatest achievement came in 1912 when they won the FA Cup, defeating West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in a replay at Bramall Lane. This remains the club’s only major trophy, though they also reached the 1910 final. Barnsley enjoyed their sole season of Premier League football in 1997-98, memorably dubbed “It’s just like watching Brazil.”

Oakwell is superbly located just a 10-minute walk from Barnsley town centre and train station, making it one of the most accessible grounds in League One.
