Stevenage Complete Travel Guide – 2026-27 Season
ℹ️ 2026-27 Season Guide: The North Stand redevelopment has faced funding delays, so don’t be surprised if it’s still not finished. All other information has been researched and verified for 2026-27. Always check stevenagefc.com for the latest ticketing and matchday updates before you travel.
🏟️ ABOUT THE LAMEX STADIUM
The Lamex Stadium (also known as Broadhall Way) is Stevenage FC’s compact home since 1980, though the site has hosted football since the early 1960s. Located just over a mile from Stevenage town centre in Hertfordshire, this 7,200-7,800-capacity ground represents genuine non-league heritage combined with Football League ambition. The current configuration features four distinct stands – the all-seater West Stand (main stand with club offices and executive boxes, capacity 1,800), the all-seater South Stand (home to away supporters, with unobstructed views), the East Terrace (traditional standing, home to Stevenage’s most vocal home support), and the North Stand (terraced, capacity around 700, holding the club’s disabled supporters section).
A planned redevelopment of the North Stand into a new 1,546-seat two-tier structure has been approved but has faced repeated delays due to funding issues, including the local council being unable to provide additional support – so don’t be surprised if it’s still a building site or unchanged when you visit. The intimate atmosphere and close proximity to the pitch create an intense matchday experience regardless. Away fans occupy the South Stand behind one goal, receiving a proper all-seated view with good legroom – a step up from what you might expect at this level. The stadium’s modest size belies Stevenage’s remarkable journey from non-league to League One.
Stevenage FC – The Boro – were founded in 1976 following the bankruptcy of the town’s former club, Stevenage Athletic. The club’s rise has been remarkable – from park football to the Football League in just 34 years. Stevenage famously won five consecutive promotions between 1991-1996, reaching the Football Conference where they became legendary giant-killers.
Despite winning the Conference in 1995-96, they were denied promotion to the Football League due to insufficient stadium capacity – a devastating blow that inspired the ground improvements. The club finally achieved Football League status in 2010 after winning the Conference Premier, then remarkably gained back-to-back promotions to reach League One by 2011.
Stevenage have competed in League One and League Two since, establishing themselves as a resilient club that consistently punches above its weight. The club is renowned for its excellent youth academy and community focus, remaining deeply rooted in the local town despite professional status. The distinctive red and white colours have become synonymous with determination and overcoming adversity. Stevenage FC represents genuine grassroots football heritage, proving that ambition, community support, and careful management can take a club from park pitches to the professional game.

🍺 PUBS & DRINKS NEAR THE STADIUM
⚠️ IMPORTANT ADVICE: The Lamex Stadium area has limited pub options immediately nearby. The club bar behind the South Stand is your best bet – it shows live sport before/after games, serves drinks at decent prices, and creates a friendly atmosphere for both sets of fans. Stevenage is generally a welcoming place for away supporters.

💭 FINAL THOUGHTS
Visiting the Lamex Stadium offers an authentic lower-league football experience that’s increasingly rare in modern football. This is a compact, intimate ground where away fans get a proper all-seated view in the South Stand, close to the pitch, creating the kind of atmosphere that large modern bowls struggle to replicate. The away section is modest (500-800 capacity), but the proximity to the action and good legroom make it a genuinely comfortable away end for this level. The planned North Stand redevelopment has stalled somewhat due to funding issues, but the current setup retains genuine non-league character that makes this away day special.
The club bar behind the South Stand is excellent – genuinely welcoming to away supporters with cheaper-than-town prices and a friendly mixed atmosphere that embodies community football at its best. Stewards are friendly, facilities are functional, and the whole matchday operation runs smoothly despite the modest scale!
The town of Stevenage itself is functional rather than beautiful – it’s a post-war new town designed for efficiency rather than charm. However, the excellent transport links more than compensate! Just 25 minutes from London King’s Cross on the East Coast Main Line (trains every 15-20 minutes), Stevenage is brilliantly accessible from across the country.
Many away fans base themselves in London and make it a day trip up – it’s genuinely that convenient. The free car park opposite the stadium (capacity ~500) is excellent value if driving, though arrive 90+ minutes early for the best chance of a space. The leisure park adjacent to the stadium has quick food options (McDonald’s, KFC), whilst the club bar at the ground serves decent drinks at good prices.
Stevenage Old Town (1.5 miles) has traditional pubs if you have time to explore, and nearby Hitchin (10 minutes by train) offers a much prettier historic setting if you’re making a weekend of it!
What makes Stevenage special isn’t glossy facilities or tourist attractions – it’s the genuine community spirit and remarkable story. This club went from park football in 1976 to the Football League by 2010, overcoming the heartbreak of being denied promotion in 1996 despite winning the Conference. The resilience and ambition that characterise Stevenage FC create a welcoming environment where visiting supporters are treated with respect and friendliness. The compact ground, authentic terrace, excellent club bar, and community atmosphere represent everything that’s good about lower-league football.
If you’re combining with London sightseeing, it’s perfect – quick train up for the match, brilliant authentic football experience, then back to the capital in 25 minutes. The Lamex Stadium delivers proper football in an intimate setting where away fans can create real atmosphere. This is grassroots English football done right – welcoming, authentic, and full of character. Come for the football, appreciate the community spirit, and enjoy one of the most accessible yet authentic away days in League One!
Take the train from King’s Cross, use the brilliant club bar, stand on a proper terrace, and experience community football where Hertfordshire passion meets authentic lower-league atmosphere!
