Swindon Town FC – Your Complete Travel Guide for 2025-26
The Robins — League Cup Winners 1969 — Premier League 1993-94
ℹ️ 2025-26 Season Guide: All information has been researched and verified for the current season. Always check swindontownfc.co.uk for the latest ticketing and matchday updates before you travel. Key notes: Away fans are allocated the Arkells Stand (covered, approx. 1,200 seats) and/or the Stratton Bank End (uncovered, 2,100 seats for larger fixtures). Ticketing is card/contactless only. Swindon station is under a mile from the ground — approximately a 10-15 minute walk. The ground is now officially named the Nigel Eady County Ground after a naming rights deal. The Stratton Bank End was reopened in December 2025 after safety works — check current allocation status with your club.
⚽ ABOUT THE COUNTY GROUND
The County Ground — now officially the Nigel Eady County Ground — has been home to Swindon Town since 1896, making it one of English football’s most enduring venues. Located less than a mile from the town centre and station, it’s a compact, characterful ground in the traditional English style with four distinct stands, a distinctive Rolex clock on the main stand (installed 1963, the only one at any football ground in the world), and a history stretching back over 125 years.
The ground was substantially redeveloped in the early 1990s. The Don Rogers Stand (named after the club’s talismanic 1969 League Cup-winning winger) opened in 1994 as the main cantilever stand offering excellent unobstructed views. Opposite sits the Arkells Stand, a single-tier structure dating to 1971 which houses both home and away supporters, away fans are allocated the west corner. The Town End is home to Swindon’s most vocal support. The Stratton Bank End is the east end, an uncovered former terrace with seats bolted on, which houses the larger away following when required.
In 2023, Swindon Town and the Swindon Town Supporters Club purchased the County Ground from Swindon Borough Council for £2.3 million, a significant moment for supporter ownership and the club’s long-term future. Plans for redevelopment of the Don Rogers Stand are under consultation, with proposals for new facilities expected to come to a vote in spring 2026.
The County Ground holds a piece of football history: in 1951, Swindon Town became the first Football League club to install floodlights. Arsenal followed six months later. The record attendance is 32,000, set for an FA Cup tie against Arsenal in January 1972. Current capacity is 15,728.

Parking Options:
🅿️ Stadium Car Park – SN1 2ED (£10 per car)
On-site parking at the County Ground costs £10 per car — frequently noted as expensive relative to ticket prices. Spaces cannot be reserved in advance so arrive early for the best chance of a space. Convenient but pricey.
🅿️ Swindon Cricket Club – SN1 2ED (£5.50 by card/contactless) ⭐ RECOMMENDED ⭐
The cricket club on County Road is a firm away fan favourite. Park here (on non-cricket match days) for £5.50 by card/contactless, use their bar for a pre-match drink and food, then walk to the ground, it’s right next door. Open for 3pm Saturday fixtures. Excellent value compared to the stadium car park, with the bonus of a pre-match drink included. Note: open subject to weather conditions as it’s on the grass. Strongly recommended.
🅿️ St Joseph’s Catholic College – Ocotal Way, SN3 3LR (£5)
A popular matchday car park at St Joseph’s School on Ocotal Way. £5 per car, slightly further from the ground but a reasonable walk. Recommended as a cheaper alternative to the stadium car park.
🅿️ Street Parking – Shrivenham Road and surrounds
Free street parking is available on Shrivenham Road behind the Stratton Bank End. Check signage carefully before leaving your vehicle. Some areas have experienced car break-ins, particularly during evening fixtures, so be mindful of what you leave on display. Arrive early for the best street parking spots.
♿ Disabled Parking
5 covered wheelchair spaces available for away fans, charged at the age-related price. Pre-booking is essential — contact Swindon Town in advance at swindontownfc.co.uk or on 0871 876 1879.
🍺 PUBS & DRINKS NEAR THE COUNTY GROUND
ℹ️ AWAY FAN ADVICE: The away pub scene around Swindon’s County Ground is workable rather than spectacular. The best options are the Merlin on Drove Road (5 minutes from the ground, specifically away-friendly) and the Cricket Club on County Road. The town centre offers more choice but requires a slightly longer walk. Some pubs may require colours to be covered and some don’t allow children, always check ahead. There is a dedicated away fan bar (Bar 71) inside the Arkells Stand.
🍺 Inside the Ground
🍺 Bar 71 – Away Fan Bar, Arkells Stand
The dedicated away fan bar inside the Arkells Stand is to the left of the away turnstiles. Opens at 12:30pm and shows early kick-off games on Sky Sports. Can get busy pre-match due to its size, if it’s crowded, the Cricket Club outside is a much better option. Drink early if using Bar 71 as it can overcrowd quickly.
🍺 Closest to the Ground (5-10 minutes)
🍺 Swindon Cricket Club – County Road ⭐ TOP PICK ⭐
The cricket club, right next to the County Ground on County Road, is one of the best pre-match options available. Away fans are welcome to park here (£5.50 by card), drink in their bar, watch early kick-offs, and eat. It’s cheap, friendly, family-welcome and genuinely good for combining parking with pre-match drinks. Only open for 3pm Saturday fixtures (weather permitting — the car park is grass). Highly recommended for those driving.
🍺 The Merlin – Drove Road ⭐ BEST AWAY PUB NEAR THE GROUND ⭐
Located on Drove Road, near the Magic Roundabout (about 5 minutes from the ground), the Merlin is consistently rated as the best away-friendly pub near the County Ground. Greene King pub with big screens showing early kick-offs on Sky Sports, a good range of beers and lagers, outside garden area, and a welcoming atmosphere for visiting fans. Family-friendly. A reliable pre-match destination and the go-to recommendation for travelling supporters.
🍺 Station Area (10-15 min walk from ground)
🍺 Queens Tap – Station Road (adjacent to station)
Right outside Swindon station on Station Road. Has been welcoming to away fans in past seasons and a good first stop immediately after arriving. Decent range of drinks, straightforward pub atmosphere, useful as an immediate arrival base before making your way to the ground.
🍺 Great Western Hotel – Station Road (adjacent to station)
Next to the Queens Tap on Station Road, the Great Western Hotel has a bar open to passing visitors and has been used by away fans as a comfortable pre-match stop. Slightly smarter surroundings than a typical pub. Also has accommodation if you fancy staying the night.
🍺 Town Centre (15 min walk / short bus ride from ground)
🍺 JD Wetherspoon / Various Town Centre Bars – Regent Street and Fleming Way
Swindon town centre has a range of chain pubs and bars along Regent Street and Fleming Way, about 15 minutes’ walk or a short bus ride from the County Ground. The town centre Wetherspoons and other chains offer the standard reliable pre-match option for groups wanting cheap and cheerful before heading groundward. Note that town centre pubs may require colours to be covered and some don’t allow children — check ahead.
🍔 FOOD NEAR THE COUNTY GROUND
🍔 At and Around the Ground
Concourse – Burgers, Pies and Snacks (inside Arkells Stand)
The Arkells Stand away concourse has refreshment kiosks offering the standard range of pies, hot dogs, burgers, sweets and hot drinks. Facilities are functional if basic, view them as honest rather than impressive. Get food outside pre-match if you want something more substantial.
Main Car Park – Burger Bar and Greek Street Food Stall
In the main car park outside the County Ground, there is a burger bar and a Greek street food stall on matchdays. These are well worth trying pre-match if you’re in the area early and want something a bit different from the usual stadium fare.
Burger King and Frying Fish Chip Shop – Drove Road (near Magic Roundabout)
Just across from the County Ground on Drove Road near the Magic Roundabout is a Burger King and the Frying Fish chip shop. The chip shop is popular on matchdays, the queue is often long but that’s a reliable sign of quality. Convenient for fans arriving from the south or using the Merlin pub.
🍔 Town Centre
Swindon Town Centre – Regent Street, Brunel Shopping Centre
Swindon’s town centre is within half a mile of the County Ground and has a full range of chain restaurants, cafés and fast food options. The Brunel Shopping Centre and Regent Street have the usual high-street chains. The town centre is particularly useful for fans arriving early who want a proper sit-down meal before making their way to the ground.
McArthurGlen Designer Outlet (near STEAM Museum) – 10 min from the station
The designer outlet adjacent to the STEAM Museum (about 10-15 minutes walk from the station) has various restaurants and cafés. Good for fans combining a visit to the STEAM Museum with pre-match food, particularly for families or those making a full day of it. Plenty of food and drink choices. mcarthurglen.com/uk/designer-outlet-swindon

Unique, baffling and oddly wonderful.

📌 Away Stand – Arkells Stand: Standard allocation is approximately 1,200 covered seats in the west corner of the Arkells Stand. This is a single-tier all-seater stand running along the side of the pitch. Be aware that two large supporting pillars can obstruct the view from some seats towards the back ,if possible, request seats in the lower rows or front half of the stand. For larger away followings, the uncovered Stratton Bank End (2,100 seats) can also be allocated. The Stratton Bank has no roof, so bring waterproofs in the winter.
🍺 Food & Drink: Bar 71 (away fan bar) opens at 12:30pm inside the Arkells Stand — left of the away turnstiles. Concourse kiosks serve pies, burgers, hot dogs and hot drinks. In the car park: burger bar and Greek street food. On Drove Road: Burger King and fish and chip shop. The Cricket Club (if parking there) has its own bar and food. ♿ Disabled Access: 5 covered wheelchair spaces for away supporters, charged at age-related price with carer admitted free of charge. Pre-booking essential, contact Swindon Town in advance. On-street disabled bays may be available around the ground, check current signage.
💭 FINAL THOUGHTS
Swindon Town have one of the most remarkable stories in English football — a club who beat Arsenal in a League Cup Final in 1969 against all odds, who had their 1990 promotion denied by an illegal payments scandal, who clawed their way back up under Glenn Hoddle to reach the Premier League in 1993, conceded 100 goals in a season and were relegated, and who have spent most of the years since trying to find their way back. There’s genuine substance here beneath the League Two surface.
The County Ground is a proper old English football ground — compact, characterful, with that unique Rolex clock and a history to match. The Arkells Stand away allocation is workable, though watch out for pillars. If you get the Stratton Bank, wrap up warm and bring a hood. The Merlin and Cricket Club are the pre-match go-tos. Get to the STEAM Museum if you arrive early. Consider Bath for a proper overnight stay — or Avebury in the morning if you’re an early riser and fancy an encounter with 5,000-year-old stones.
Swindon is easy by train from London (just over an hour), Bristol and Cardiff, making it one of the more accessible League Two away days for fans from across the south. A thoroughly decent and underrated away day when taken as a full package.
