ℹ️ 2025-26 Season Guide: All information has been researched and verified for the current season. Always check tranmererovers.co.uk for the latest ticketing and matchday updates before you travel. Note: All roads around Prenton Park are resident permit only – do not attempt street parking. 🏟️ ABOUT PRENTON PARK

Prenton Park has been home to Tranmere Rovers since 1912, and sits in the residential suburb of Prenton in Birkenhead on the Wirral Peninsula, just across the River Mersey from Liverpool. With a capacity of 16,587 all-seated, it’s a compact, traditional ground with genuine football character.

The ground was largely rebuilt in the 1990s following the Taylor Report. Four distinct stands surround the pitch: the imposing Kop at one end, the two-tiered Main Stand on the Borough Road side, the neat Johnny King Stand along the side, and the Cowshed – home to away supporters – opposite.

The Cowshed Stand gets its name from its original corrugated iron structure – with a distinctive sloping appearance caused by the road running directly behind it. It’s fully covered, generates excellent acoustics for away fans, and holds up to 2,500 supporters. A bar and TV screens have been added in recent years.

Founded in 1884 as Belmont FC, Tranmere became a founder member of the Football League’s Third Division North in 1921. They enjoyed their most glittering era under John King in the late 1980s and early 1990s, reaching the play-offs for the top flight three years in succession. John Aldridge then took them to the League Cup Final in 2000.

The Rovers wear an iconic all-white kit with blue trim – their colours since 1962. The Johnny King Stand commemorates their greatest manager, while the Kop generates a boisterous atmosphere on big matchdays. Birkenhead is a proud football town with a genuine passion for its club.

The 2025-26 season is Tranmere’s sixth consecutive campaign in League Two. After a difficult 2024-25, the club appointed Andy Crosby as manager ahead of this season. There’s a real determination among the fanbase to push back towards League One, making Prenton Park an atmospheric and passionate away-day destination.

🚆 GETTING THERE BY TRAIN

The train is the best way for most visiting supporters to reach Prenton Park. You’ll arrive at Liverpool Lime Street first, then hop on the Merseyrail Wirral Line – a quick underground connection – to reach Birkenhead. It’s a smooth, straightforward journey that avoids all the matchday traffic.

From Liverpool Lime Street, follow the signs through the concourse to the Merseyrail underground platforms. Take the Wirral Line to either Birkenhead Central or Rock Ferry – both are around a 15–20 minute walk from Prenton Park. Trains run frequently throughout the day.

Merseytravel also operates a dedicated Soccerbus service from Birkenhead Central and Hamilton Square stations directly to Prenton Park. The service runs from 90 minutes before kick-off at 15–20 minute intervals until 20 minutes before kick-off, and again for 20 minutes after the final whistle. It costs just £1 return when booked with your train ticket, or £1 each way on the bus.

📍 Walking Route from Birkenhead Central (approx. 20 mins):

Exit the station and cross the road, then turn right. At the roundabout, take the right turn onto Borough Road. Continue all the way down Borough Road, past four sets of traffic lights, then turn right onto Prenton Road West – the stadium approach is directly in front of you.

📍 Walking Route from Rock Ferry (approx. 20 mins):

Exit the station and turn right up Bedford Road until you reach a roundabout. Turn right onto Bebington Road and continue until you reach the Sportsman’s pub. Turn left onto Prenton Road West – the stadium is on your left.

🚗 GETTING THERE BY CAR

Use postcode CH42 9PY for sat-nav. The ground is well signposted from the main approach roads. Road closures operate from approximately one hour before kick-off until 30 minutes after the final whistle – plan your route accordingly.

From the M53 / M56 (recommended from most directions):

Exit M53 at Junction 4 onto the B5151. Take the fourth exit at the roundabout – the ground is signposted from here. After approximately 2.5 miles, Mount Road leads onto Storeton Road; turn right at the traffic lights near the church onto Prenton Road West. Prenton Park is on your right after about 200 yards.

From Liverpool via the Kingsway (Wallasey) Tunnel:

Take the Kingsway Mersey Tunnel (note: a toll applies to vehicles). After the toll booths, continue on the M53 and exit at Junction 3. Take the first exit (signposted Birkenhead) and continue for approximately one mile, passing Sainsbury’s on your left. Prenton Park will be on your left after roughly five minutes.

⚠️ Important: All roads immediately surrounding Prenton Park operate a residents-only parking scheme. Do not attempt to park on side streets – you will be ticketed or clamped. Pre-book parking or use the options listed below.

🅿️ PARKING

Parking around Prenton Park is genuinely limited – pre-booking is strongly recommended. The options below are your best bets for a hassle-free matchday.

✅ Prenton Park Stadium Car Park (CH42 9PY) – RECOMMENDED

Limited spaces available. Pre-book online at trfctickets.co.uk for around £6 (£7 on the day if available). Blue Badge holders can book online without uploading documentation. Accessible spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

🍺 Mersey Clipper Pub Car Park

The Mersey Clipper pub next to the stadium offers limited parking for a fee, payable on the day. It fills up quickly – arrive early if you plan to use it. A good option if you’re planning a pre-match drink there anyway.

📌 Park & Ride Option

Drive to one of the Merseyrail Park & Ride stations (such as Arrowe Park, Upton or further out on the Wirral Line), then take the train into Birkenhead Central and use the Soccerbus or walk. This is a smart option on busy matchdays when local parking is at a premium.

♿ Disabled parking: a small number of covered accessible spaces are available at the ground. Pre-book by calling the club on 03330 144452 or online at trfctickets.co.uk.

🍺 PUBS FOR AWAY FANS

The pub scene around Prenton Park is decent and welcoming for the most part. A few venues require you to cover your colours on high-profile fixtures, and some don’t allow children – noted below where applicable. The Fan Zone inside the stadium car park is a reliable safe bet for all supporters.

⭐ Mersey Clipper – TOP PICK (2 mins from ground)

The go-to away fans’ pub near Prenton Park. A short walk from the stadium, the Mersey Clipper welcomes visiting supporters and boasts a newer outdoor terrace that’s great in summer. Big screens show early kick-offs. Good beer selection and a friendly, football-focused atmosphere. Families welcome.

🍻 Fan Zone – Main Stadium Car Park

Tranmere operate a Fan Zone for visiting supporters in the main car park outside Prenton Park. Open from 90 minutes before kick-off, it can get busy in the hour leading up to the match. A sociable, safe pre-match option with food and drink available. Away fans are very welcome here.

🏠 Sportsman’s Arms – Prenton Road East (10 mins walk)

A traditional pub popular with both home and away supporters. Situated on the walking route from Rock Ferry station, it’s a handy stop-off if you’re arriving that way. A proper boozer with a warm welcome – worth calling ahead on big matchdays to check the current home/away policy.

📺 Bar 71 – Inside the Cowshed Stand

The dedicated away supporters’ bar inside the Cowshed Stand. Opens from around 12:30 pm for 3 pm fixtures and shows early kick-offs on TV. Handy if you’re heading straight to the ground, though it can get busy close to kick-off. Cash and card usually accepted inside the ground.

💡 Pub Tips: The Prenton Park Hotel (Borough Road) is sometimes an option for away fans but operates a home/away policy that can vary by fixture – check in advance. For a more relaxed experience, stick to the Mersey Clipper or Fan Zone. If you’ve arrived via Liverpool, there are excellent city-centre pubs around Lime Street and the docks before you board the Merseyrail.

🍔 FOOD & DRINK

The Cowshed Stand concourse serves the standard matchday fare – pies, burgers, hot dogs, chips, hot and cold drinks, and alcohol. It’s functional and well-stocked. Both cash and cards are accepted inside the ground, though it’s always wise to carry both.

Along Borough Road – the main road between Birkenhead Central and the ground – you’ll find a good selection of takeaways and fast food options. These include Sayers the bakers (great for a pre-match pie or pasty), Captain Tony’s Pizza, Ruby’s chip shop, and an Eastern Delight Chinese takeaway.

If you want a proper sit-down meal before the match, head into Birkenhead town centre or across to Liverpool city centre – just 10 minutes by Merseyrail. Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle area offers an outstanding range of independent restaurants, cafes and street food vendors that are well worth the short trip.

💡 Food Tip

If you arrive via Liverpool Lime Street or James Street, grab food in the city centre before boarding the Wirral Line – Liverpool has one of England’s best food scenes and far more choice than the immediate ground area.

🎫 TICKETS & GETTING IN

Away tickets for Prenton Park can be purchased online through your own club or directly from Tranmere via trfctickets.co.uk. Tickets are also available on the day from the ticket office at Prenton Park – note there is typically a £2 increase per category for matchday purchases, so buying in advance is worthwhile.

Advance tickets can be collected from outside the club shop on arrival. Pre-purchased tickets may require a QR code for entry – download your ticket to your phone before travelling to avoid connectivity issues near the ground.

Away supporters enter via the dedicated away turnstiles for the Cowshed Stand. Turnstiles typically open around 1:30 pm for 3 pm kick-offs. Stewards are experienced and welcoming to visiting supporters.

♿ Accessibility

The away end has a changing places toilet, stoma-friendly toilets, a quiet room (also suitable for breastfeeding), a prayer space, and facilities for neurodiverse supporters. To use the quiet room, speak to a steward upon arrival. For full disabled supporter information visit tranmererovers.co.uk.

💡 AWAY DAY TIPS

🚆 Take the train – seriously

The Merseyrail Wirral Line makes this one of the easiest grounds to reach without a car. Drive to a Park & Ride, get the train to Lime Street, then hop on the Wirral Line. Use the Soccerbus from Birkenhead Central for a direct ride to the ground. Avoid the matchday traffic headaches entirely.

⏰ Allow extra time for Liverpool connections

If you’re travelling through Liverpool, give yourself plenty of time – especially if there’s a Liverpool or Everton home game on the same day. The Merseyrail network is very reliable, but platforms at Liverpool Central can get very busy. Check the Merseytravel website before you go.

🍻 Go straight to the Fan Zone or Mersey Clipper

Both are clearly signed and welcoming to away supporters. Avoid wandering around the residential streets looking for a pub – there simply isn’t much there. Head to the ground or to Borough Road and you’ll find everything you need.

📱 Download your ticket in advance

Mobile signal near the ground can be patchy on matchdays. Download your e-ticket to your phone before you travel to avoid any issues at the turnstile. If collecting at the club shop, allow an extra 10–15 minutes for queues on busy days.

🚧 Post-match road closures

Roads around Prenton Park are closed for approximately 30 minutes after the final whistle. If you’ve driven, factor this into your plans and perhaps enjoy a post-match drink in the ground or Fan Zone before heading back to your vehicle.

📖 TRANMERE ROVERS – CLUB HISTORY

Tranmere Rovers Football Club were founded in 1884 as Belmont Football Club, adopting their current name the following year. Based in Birkenhead on the Wirral Peninsula, they became founder members of the Third Division North when the Football League expanded in 1921, and have remained a Football League club ever since.

Their only Football League championship came in 1937–38 when they won the Third Division North. They also hold a remarkable Football League record – on Boxing Day 1935, Tranmere beat Oldham Athletic 13–4 at Prenton Park, with Bunny Bell netting nine goals, an individual league record at the time.

The club’s golden era came under the management of John King in the late 1980s and early 1990s. After coming close to administration in 1987, Rovers rebuilt spectacularly, reaching the play-offs for promotion to the Premier League in three consecutive seasons from 1990 to 1992. It remains the most exciting period in the club’s history.

Under player-manager John Aldridge – the former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland striker – Tranmere reached the Football League Cup Final in 2000, losing 2–1 to Leicester City at Wembley. Their League Cup run included a stunning aggregate victory over Premiership sides Sunderland and Southampton.

After financial difficulties and successive relegations, Rovers dropped into the National League in 2015 for the first time. They returned to the Football League in 2018 via back-to-back promotions, briefly reaching League One before settling back into League Two. The famous all-white kit with blue trim has been their trademark since 1962.

The Johnny King Stand is a permanent tribute to arguably their greatest manager. A club built on community, proud Merseyside identity and some spectacular giant-killing moments – Tranmere Rovers are a proper football institution.

👍 FINAL THOUGHTS

“`

A trip to Prenton Park is a proper, traditional Football League away day on the Wirral Peninsula – and it comes with one of English football’s great bonus features: the city of Liverpool just a short Merseyrail hop away. Few away days in the fourth tier offer this kind of broader appeal.

The Cowshed Stand is a good away end with decent sightlines, strong acoustics and a bar. The Fan Zone and the Mersey Clipper make pre-match straightforward and sociable. And with Birkenhead Park, the Mersey Ferry, the Wirral Transport Museum and the full glory of Liverpool all within easy reach, there’s more than enough to keep you busy before kick-off.

Tranmere Rovers is a proud club with a rich football history and a passionate fanbase. Come with your colours on, bring some noise, and take some time to explore this underrated corner of Merseyside. You won’t be disappointed.
