Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday Complete Travel Guide – 2026-27 Season

⚠️ 2026-27 Season Notice: Wednesday are back in League One after a turbulent 2025-26 – administration, an 18-point deduction, and a temporary safety closure of the North Stand under previous ownership. The club was bought by Arise Capital Partners in May 2026, and the new owners are investing in Hillsborough, including a safe-standing trial in the North Stand for 2026-27. Details like ticket prices, pub/venue status, and transport can change – always check swfc.co.uk before travelling.

🦉 ABOUT HILLSBOROUGH

Hillsborough is one of English football’s great historic venues, home to Sheffield Wednesday since 1899. With a current official capacity of 34,835, (though this is currently around the 32,000 mark due to ongoing improvements etc), this imposing ground in the Owlerton district of Sheffield has witnessed over a century of footballing history. The stadium’s iconic North Stand, with its distinctive cantilever roof, dominates the Sheffield skyline and stands as a monument to the club’s proud heritage. Wednesday are one of the oldest professional football clubs in the world, founded in 1867, and their blue and white stripes are amongst the most traditional and recognisable in English football.

The Owls have a glittering history that includes four league championships (1902-03, 1903-04, 1928-29, 1929-30), three FA Cups (1896, 1907, 1935), and one League Cup (1991). Hillsborough has hosted FA Cup semi-finals, international matches, and witnessed some truly memorable moments in football history.

The 2025-26 season was one of the toughest in the club’s history, with the club entering administration, an 18-point deduction, and relegation to League One confirmed with 13 games still to play. A takeover by Arise Capital Partners completed in May 2026 has since brought fresh stability, with the new owners already investing in the stadium, including a safe-standing trial in the North Stand for 2026-27. The stadium retains its traditional charm whilst offering modern facilities, and visiting supporters invariably comment on the ground’s unique atmosphere and character.

Getting from Sheffield Station to Hillsborough

🚋 SUPERTRAM (EASIEST OPTION)

Yellow Route towards Middlewood: From Sheffield Station/City centre, take the Yellow route (direction Middlewood) – NOT the Blue route, which splits off towards Malin Bridge before reaching the ground. Get off at Leppings Lane, right outside the away end. Journey takes around 15–21 minutes.

Cost: Single fares are capped at £3 across the network

Frequency: Yellow trams run roughly every 12 minutes (every 5 minutes combined with Blue as far as Hillsborough, where the routes split)

Tip: If catching the tram from the station you need to change onto a yellow route tram, this can be done at any stop between Cathedral and Hillsborough. Double-check the display on the tram itself says Middlewood, not Malin Bridge – both leave from the same stops in the city centre. Get a return ticket to save queueing after the match, and consider waiting 20-30 minutes post-match for crowds to disperse.

🚶 WALK (40-45 MINUTES)

An energetic 2-mile walk through Sheffield city centre and up to Hillsborough. Take you through the fantastic pubs and eateries around West Street and Division Street before heading up towards the ground. Great for soaking up atmosphere but it’s quite hilly – definitely easier on the way back down!

🚕 TAXI (£8-12)

About £8-12 from Sheffield station to Hillsborough. Takes 10-15 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis readily available outside the station. Pre-book for return journey to avoid post-match queues.

🚗 BY CAR

Postcode for Sat Nav: S6 1SW

From M62 (East): Exit onto M1 southbound, then Junction 36

From A57 (West): Follow signs through city centre towards Hillsborough

Parking Options:

🅿️ Official Stadium Car Parks: There’s no official parking at the stadium unless you’re in hospitality, so consider other options.

🏙️ City Centre Car Parks: Park & Ride tram to the ground

Options: Q-Park Sheffield (Charles Street), NCP Cambridge Street, Sheffield Station Car Park

Cost: £5-10 for the day

Advantage: Easier exit after match, access to city centre pubs and restaurants

🏘️ Street Parking (Owlerton area): Limited free street parking around Hillsborough

Areas: Streets off Penistone Road North, but check for restrictions

Important: Be respectful of residents – don’t block driveways

💡 Top Parking Tip: No available parking at the stadium. The city centre Park & Ride option is genuinely your best bet – park at Sheffield station or nearby, grab food and a pint in the city centre, then take the Yellow tram (direction Middlewood) straight to the ground. Much easier exit after the match too!

🎫 AWAY SUPPORTER ALLOCATION

Your SectionWest Stand / Leppings Lane End (Upper Tier)
AllocationTypically around 2,400 (Upper West Stand only); up to around 3,700 (Upper + Lower) for bigger away followings – reduced from a previous 4,700 maximum following a 2023 safety review of the stand
ViewElevated position offers good views of the pitch, though you’re quite high up and distant from the action
FacilitiesTraditional concourse with standard food and drink options – the facilities show the stadium’s age but are functional
