Chesterfield FC – Your Complete Travel Guide for 2025-26

ℹ️ 2025-26 Season Guide: All information in this guide has been researched and verified for the 2025-26 season. We always recommend checking chesterfield-fc.co.uk for the latest ticketing, pricing and matchday updates before you travel.

🏟️ ABOUT THE SMH GROUP STADIUM

The SMH Group Stadium – opened in 2010 on the site of the former Dema Glassworks in Whittington Moor, around 1.5 miles north of Chesterfield town centre – is a bright, modern all-seater ground that replaced the club’s much-loved but ageing former home at Saltergate after more than 130 years.

With a capacity of around 10,500, the stadium was designed by Sheffield-based architects Ward McHugh Associates and cost £13 million to build. Its four covered stands – the LMD Vacuum Excavation (West) Stand, the Motan Colortronic (South) Stand, the Auto Windscreen (North) Stand and the Chesterfield College Community (East) Stand – all offer unobstructed views of the pitch, a significant upgrade on Saltergate’s famously quirky sightlines.

A real point of pride is the HUB community facility on the exterior of the East Stand, a two-storey building housing a café, gym, therapy pool, sports hall and classrooms – a genuine statement of the club’s community roots. The stadium has also hosted England Under-19 and Under-21 matches, and welcomed Elton John for a concert in 2012. Note that the stadium has had several naming sponsors over its short life (b2net, Proact, Technique) – since June 2023 it has been the SMH Group Stadium.

Chesterfield FC – The Spireites – are one of English football’s genuinely historic clubs, with roots tracing back to at least 1866 (though the professionally constituted club dates from 1891). They play in their distinctive blue and white, and take their famous nickname from the Crooked Spire of St Mary and All Saints, the beloved twisted landmark that dominates the Chesterfield skyline.

The club has spent the vast majority of its history in the third and fourth tiers of English football, with notable periods in the second tier and a memorable run to the FA Cup semi-final in 1997 – a match that still gets talked about in the town today. Chesterfield famously re-entered the EFL in 2024 after a spell in non-league football, and the 2025-26 season sees them back in League Two, with a new stadium, a committed fanbase, and a town that takes enormous pride in its football club. The Miners’ Strike Derby against Mansfield Town is the fiercest local rivalry – one with very real historical and cultural roots from the 1984-85 dispute.

The SMH Group Stadium sits on Sheffield Road in Whittington Moor, about 1.5 miles north of Chesterfield town centre, and is conveniently located just off the A61 with easy motorway access via the M1 at Junction 29. Chesterfield railway station – served by East Midlands Railway direct from London St Pancras and Sheffield, and by CrossCountry from the north – is roughly 1.3 miles from the ground, making it a 20-30 minute walk or a quick taxi ride.

The road becomes Canal Wharf – where it meets Hazlehurst Lane, bear right onto the footpath running alongside the dual carriageway past Casa Hotel. 🍺 PUBS & DRINKS NEAR THE SMH GROUP STADIUM

💡 KEY ADVICE: The pub scene around the SMH Group Stadium is decent for a League Two ground, centred on Sheffield Road. The Derby Tup is the standout recommendation for away fans – a genuine, welcoming proper boozer with great ales, good prices and a mixed home/away crowd who get along fine.

The Batch House food court opposite the stadium is ideal if you want food rather than a drink. Fans arriving by car via Staveley should note the Speedwell Arms (Townes Brewery) as a worthwhile detour on the approach.

🍺 Near the Stadium (Walk From Ground)

⭐ The Derby Tup – 387 Sheffield Road, Chesterfield, S41 8LF

The number one recommendation for away fans visiting the SMH Group Stadium. A proper old-fashioned real ale pub just a 7-minute walk from the stadium on Sheffield Road, The Derby Tup is consistently praised by visiting supporters for its excellent selection of cask ales, friendly atmosphere and genuinely reasonable prices (most pints £3.20-£4.40). It welcomes both home and away fans, and the mix works well – you’ll find yourselves having perfectly civil conversations about the merits of whichever ground this is replacing in someone’s travels. Open from 11 am on Saturdays (10 am for early kick-offs), from 12 pm on Tuesdays. Highly recommended.

🍽️ The Batch House – Directly opposite the SMH Group Stadium

A good range of street food styles, making it a genuinely useful option for away fans who arrive early and want something more substantial than the usual matchday fare.

Distance: Directly opposite the stadium | Good for: Pre-match food, variety of cuisines

🍺 For Those Driving – Worth a Detour

🍺 Speedwell Arms (Townes Brewery) – Staveley (on A619 approach from Junction 30)

If you’re coming from Junction 30 of the M1 via the A619 through Staveley, keep your eyes open for the Speedwell Arms on the right – a proper Townes Brewery brewpub that’s a genuine hidden gem for real ale fans. Worth an early arrival to call in before continuing to the ground.

Good for: Real ale fans, pre-match drinks on the way in

🍺 Brampton Brewery – Rose & Crown – 104 Old Road, Brampton, S40 2QT

About a 10-minute drive from the ground, this pub, owned and operated by Brampton Brewery, is a superb real ale destination – walls adorned with Chesterfield memorabilia, a brilliant rotating range of guest beers and ciders, and a warmly welcoming atmosphere. If you’re driving and have a designated driver, this is worth planning around. Call ahead to check hours.

The café (Chester’s Den) in the East Stand HUB is open to the public seven days a week, including matchdays. A good range of food is also available, though pre-match eating at the Batch House opposite is recommended if you want more choice.

🎯 THINGS TO DO IN & AROUND CHESTERFIELD

Chesterfield is a genuine market town with real character and an extraordinary gateway to some of England’s finest countryside and stately homes. The Crooked Spire alone is worth the visit – there is genuinely nothing else like it in the country. And once you’ve explored the town itself, you’re right on the doorstep of the Peak District, Chatsworth House, Hardwick Hall, Bolsover Castle and the cities of Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham. An away day here really does reward an extended stay.

⛪ The Crooked Spire – St Mary and All Saints Church (Unmissable)

Chesterfield’s most famous landmark is one of those things that genuinely stops you in your tracks – a medieval church spire that twists dramatically from its base, leaning 9 feet 6 inches from its true centre. It’s the largest church in Derbyshire, standing 228 feet tall, and its twisted form has spawned a dozen local legends (the Devil caught it with his tail, it twisted round to see a virgin bride – take your pick).

The actual explanation is more prosaic but no less interesting: green timber covered with 32 tons of lead roof tiles, differential expansion on sunny and shaded sides, and 600 years of Derbyshire weather. Tower tours run on Fridays and Saturdays (weather and staff permitting) – 144 steps to the top for spectacular views over the town and beyond. Free to enter the church itself; small charge for tower tours. Absolutely not to be missed before the match if you have time.

Cost: Church FREE; tower tour (small charge – check website) | Info: chesterfieldparishchurch.org.uk | Distance from stadium: ~1.5 miles (town centre)

🛒 Chesterfield Market (Over 800 Years Old)

One of the oldest and largest open-air markets in England, Chesterfield Market has been trading in the cobbled Market Place since its charter was granted by King John in 1204. Held on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays (perfect timing for a Saturday matchday), it’s a brilliant, unpretentious place to browse local produce, pick up a bargain, and soak up the genuinely warm Derbyshire market town atmosphere. The Market Hall is a handsome Victorian building worth stepping inside, too. On Thursday,s there’s also a Farmers’ Market – worth knowing about if you’re making a weekend of it.

Cost: FREE to browse | Open: Monday, Friday, Saturday | Location: Market Place, Chesterfield town centre

🏰 Chatsworth House – The Palace of the Peak (Day Trip)

Just 30 minutes from Chesterfield (there are also regular buses), Chatsworth is quite simply one of the greatest houses in England – the magnificent ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, with 300 years of extraordinary collections, a world-famous garden, a farm shop, excellent restaurants and an enormous programme of events throughout the year. If you’re combining the away day with a Saturday visit (the match is in the afternoon, after all), Chatsworth in the morning is an unforgettable combination. Book timed entry tickets in advance during peak season.

Cost: Adults approx. £25-30 (house and garden) | Info: chatsworth.org | Distance: ~30 mins by car/bus

🏰 Bolsover Castle (English Heritage)

A fairy-tale 17th-century Stuart mansion perched dramatically on a hill just a short drive east of Chesterfield. Bolsover Castle is genuinely extraordinary – the Little Castle is richly decorated with marble fireplaces and painted ceilings, the Venus Garden is romantically overgrown, and the indoor Riding School is one of the most impressive spaces in any English Heritage property. Year-round events include jousting tournaments and living history days. A superb day trip option for anyone making a full weekend of the away day.

Cost: Adults approx. £12-15 | Info: english-heritage.org.uk | Distance: ~20 mins by car

🏛️ Hardwick Hall (National Trust)

One of the greatest Elizabethan mansions in England, Hardwick Hall was the last and most spectacular house built by Bess of Hardwick in the 1590s. Famous for its remarkable “more glass than wall” exterior – the full-height windows were a statement of extraordinary wealth – Hardwick has an outstanding collection of original Elizabethan tapestries and embroideries, and is surrounded by beautiful parkland. Just 10 miles from Chesterfield and well worth a morning visit before the afternoon match.

Cost: Adults approx. £16-20 (National Trust members free) | Info: nationaltrust.org.uk | Distance: ~15 mins by car

🚢 Chesterfield Canal – Cuckoo Way

The Chesterfield Canal opened in 1777 and covers 46 miles, including a 2,880-yard tunnel. The Cuckoo Way is a walking and cycling route that follows a scenic 5.5 miles of the canal towpath from Chesterfield to Staveley – a gorgeous, peaceful walk for those arriving early on a matchday morning. The Hollingwood Hub and Tapton Lock Visitor Centre (around 4 miles from town) offers canal trips by narrowboat, a wonderful contrast to the football to follow.

Cost: FREE (walking/cycling) | Info: chesterfield.co.uk

💙 THE CHESTERFIELD EXPERIENCE – LOCAL TIPS

🔵 The Spire: Chesterfield fans call themselves the Spireites, and the Crooked Spire is central to the town’s identity. If you haven’t Googled it before you go, the first time you see it in real life is genuinely startling – photos don’t fully prepare you for just how dramatically twisted it is.

⚽ FA Cup Semi-Final 1997: Chesterfield came within a whisker of reaching the FA Cup final in 1997, leading Middlesbrough 2-0 before eventually drawing 3-3 and losing in a replay. A Jon Howard goal that arguably crossed the line and was disallowed is still spoken about with utter disbelief in the town. It remains one of the great FA Cup stories.

🏭 The Miners’ Strike Derby: The rivalry with Mansfield Town – known as the Miners’ Strike Derby – has real historical and cultural roots from the 1984-85 dispute, when Derbyshire miners struck, and Nottinghamshire miners largely did not. It’s a fixture with genuine edge and passion on both sides.

⛰️ Peak District Doorstep: Chesterfield sits right on the eastern edge of the Peak District National Park. Bakewell is just 30 minutes away – and yes, that really is where the Bakewell Pudding (not tart) comes from, and the local bakeries sell them fresh. Worth picking one up before or after the match.

🎭 Away End Acoustics: The low roof over the East Stand away section is brilliant for noise – visiting fans consistently report that the acoustics are excellent and their support really carries. If you’re the vocal type, you’ll love it.

⚽ MATCHDAY EXPERIENCE AT THE SMH GROUP STADIUM

🎫 Away Section (2025-26): The Chesterfield College Community East Stand, Block E1. Blocks E2 and E3 are opened for fixtures with a larger away following. All seats in the East Stand have unrestricted views of the pitch – a genuine improvement on many older grounds. The low roof provides good shelter and creates excellent acoustics for away fan noise.

🏟️ Stadium Atmosphere: The North Stand is where the Spireites’ most vocal support congregates, and it generates a proper noise for a League Two ground. The modern design with open corners gives the ground a slightly different feel to traditional English grounds, but the atmosphere is genuine – Chesterfield supporters are passionate and proud.

🍺 Concourse Food & Drink: Food and drink are available from the concourse kiosks throughout the East Stand. A standard pint of lager costs approximately £5.50 (check on arrival). Chester’s Den café in the HUB is also open to all on matchdays. Pre-match food at The Batch House opposite the stadium is strongly recommended if you want something more substantial.

✅ Modern Facilities: The SMH Group Stadium is a modern, all-seater venue with good disabled facilities, clean toilets and well-organised stewarding. Away fans generally report a positive experience – friendly, well-run, and without the issues that beset older grounds. The HUB community facility in the East Stand is a genuinely impressive addition.

🎫 Tickets: Book in advance via chesterfield-fc.co.uk/tickets or by calling 01246 269300. Always check the club website for any changes to ticket availability or matchday sales policy before you travel.

💭 FINAL THOUGHTS

A trip to the SMH Group Stadium is, in short, a very decent League Two away day. The ground itself is modern, clean and well-organised – the kind of place where the facilities work, the views are good and the stewarding is sensible.

The East Stand away section benefits from a cracking acoustic thanks to its low roof, allowing away fans to make themselves heard far more effectively than on many modern grounds. Chesterfield’s supporters are genuine football people who know their club’s history and wear it with pride – the Crooked Spire, the 1997 FA Cup run, the years in and out of the Football League – and that gives the atmosphere a real authenticity.

But it’s the town and the surrounding area that really elevate this from a pleasant, straightforward away day into something worth making a proper trip of. The Crooked Spire is one of England’s genuinely unmissable landmarks – a medieval church spire that twists 9 feet 6 inches from its true centre and has been doing so for over 600 years. The market, trading since 1204, is one of the finest open-air markets in the country. And within 30 minutes of Chesterfield, you have Chatsworth House, Bolsover Castle, Hardwick Hall and the Peak District National Park – a concentration of extraordinary English heritage that very few League Two destinations can match. Bakewell, with its famous puddings, is barely 25 miles away.

Our advice: arrive the night before, stay at the Casa Hotel or in Sheffield and take the train in, spend your Saturday morning at the Crooked Spire and the market, grab a pre-match pint in the Derby Tup (ales genuinely excellent, prices genuinely reasonable), and enjoy what is one of the better-equipped and better-located grounds in League Two. The Spireites are building again, the town is proud of its club, and an afternoon at the SMH Group Stadium is a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a Saturday in Derbyshire.

⚽ SMH Group Stadium – modern football, historic town, unforgettable surroundings! ⚽

💙 Up the Spireites! 🤍
