The Weston Homes Stadium, still affectionately known by its historic name “London Road” by many fans, stands as one of English football’s most characterful grounds. Opened in 1913, this traditional stadium beside the River Nene has evolved dramatically from its humble beginnings as a basic wooden stand holding just 250 spectators.

The ground’s nickname “The Posh” (Peterborough United’s team moniker) has become part of local identity, though the origin remains contested – some suggest it stemmed from the club’s aspiration to sign “posh” players, whilst others link it to an early manager’s comment that the club wanted “posh players for a posh new team”.

Today’s 15,314-capacity stadium features four distinct stands, each with its own character. The two-tiered BGL Family Stand (South) is the most impressive structure, holding nearly 5,000 fans separated by executive boxes. The Main Stand (North) houses both home supporters and the away section.

The Weston Homes London Road Terrace retains safe standing with 2,175 rail seats, providing the ground’s most atmospheric area where The Posh’s most vocal supporters gather. The Motorpoint Stand (East), opened in 2014, replaced the old Moy’s End terrace.

Note that individual stand sponsor names change fairly often as deals come and go, so don’t be surprised if signage differs slightly from what’s described here. The ground’s location beside the River Nene adds unique character – clearances from the pitch have genuinely ended up floating downstream!

Peterborough United’s history includes dramatic near-misses with oblivion. During WWII, the council nearly terminated the ground lease over £50 unpaid rent – the club was saved when two local businessmen stepped in to pay the debt.

The club purchased London Road from the council in 1954 for just £4,000, enabling major development through the 1950s. The record attendance of 30,096 was set in 1965 for an FA Cup tie with Leicester City, though this stood when much of the ground comprised terracing.

Since becoming all-seater following the Taylor Report, the modern capacity record is 14,110. In June 2019, the stadium was renamed Weston Homes Stadium under a 10-year £2 million sponsorship deal, though many still refer to it as London Road.

The Weston Homes Stadium enjoys an excellent central location beside the River Nene, approximately one mile from Peterborough Railway Station. This makes it highly accessible for rail travellers, though the 15-20 minute walk from station to ground is slightly longer than at some venues.

The stadium sits just off the A15, making road access straightforward from the A1, A47, and surrounding areas. Peterborough’s position on the East Coast Main Line provides outstanding connectivity to London (45 minutes to 1.5 hours from King’s Cross), Leeds, Sheffield, the North, and East Anglia.

The combination of excellent rail links and central location makes this a very manageable away day for most supporters.

🚂 BY TRAIN – Excellent East Coast Main Line Connectivity

Peterborough Station sits on the East Coast Main Line, offering outstanding rail connectivity from London, the North, Scotland, and East Anglia. Regular services from operators including LNER, East Midlands Railway, CrossCountry, Thameslink, and Grand Central make this one of the best-connected League One stadiums for rail travel.

The station is approximately 1 mile (1.6km) from the ground, requiring a 15-20 minute walk. Whilst not quite as convenient as some grounds, the walk is straightforward and takes you through the city centre with plenty of shops and cafés en route.

Walking Directions from Station: Turn right out of Peterborough Station onto Bourges Boulevard (A15). Walk straight along this main road passing Asda on your right. At the traffic lights near Rivergate Shopping Centre, turn right into Bridge Street (pedestrianised area). Continue straight, crossing the River Nene via Town Bridge. The stadium appears on your left after crossing the bridge. Total walk: 15-20 minutes.

The walk from the station to the ground passes through the city centre, offering plenty of pre-match food and drink options. Taxi from the station costs approximately £7.50 (5 minutes).

🚗 BY CAR – Council Car Parks Opposite Stadium

Driving to Weston Homes Stadium is straightforward with good access from the A1, A47, and A15. However, there is NO public parking at the stadium itself on matchdays.

Fortunately, two council-run car parks sit directly opposite the ground on Oundle Road, making parking very convenient despite the lack of on-site facilities. Some street parking exists on surrounding roads, though residential restrictions apply in many areas.

Driving Directions:

• From South (A1): Exit A1 at Junction 17, follow A1139 Fletton Parkway. Exit at Junction 3, take A1260 briefly, then A605 Oundle Road. Stadium on left just before town bridge.
• From North (A1): Exit A1 following signs for Leicester/Peterborough North A47. Join A47, exit after 5 miles at Junction 15. At roundabout right onto A1260 Nene Parkway. After 1 mile at mini-roundabout (Gordon Arms) left onto A605 Oundle Road. Stadium straight ahead at traffic lights before town bridge.
• From East (A47): Exit A47 at Junction 18, follow A15 directly to stadium.
• Postcode for Sat-Nav: PE2 8AL

Parking Options:

• Pleasure Fair Meadow Car Park: Council car park directly opposite stadium on Oundle Road (adjacent to Town Bridge). Very convenient location. Pay and display. Reasonable rates.
• Railworld Car Park: Council car park also opposite stadium on Oundle Road. Similar convenience and pricing to Pleasure Fair Meadow.
• Street Parking: Limited availability on surrounding streets. Check for residential parking restrictions. Arrive early.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: NO public parking at the stadium on matchdays. The two council car parks opposite the ground on Oundle Road (Pleasure Fair Meadow and Railworld) are your best options. Very convenient locations right across from the away end. Arrive 60-90 minutes before kick-off to guarantee a space.

💡 Top Tip: The council car parks opposite the stadium are genuinely convenient – you can see the ground from your parking space! Much better than many grounds where you park miles away. The location right by the River Nene and town bridge makes for a pleasant pre-match atmosphere.

✅ GOOD NEWS: Peterborough offers excellent pub options for away fans! The famous Charters Bar (converted Dutch barge on the River Nene) welcomes both sets of supporters and provides a unique pre-match experience. Several other pubs around the stadium and along the route from the station actively welcome away fans, making this a very hospitable away day.

⚽ Posh Tip: Charters Bar on the River Nene is an absolute must-visit – one of football’s most unique pub experiences! Converted Dutch barge serving excellent real ales with both sets of fans mixing happily. If Charters is too busy, The Peacock (right by the ground) or The Cherry Tree (10 mins walk with parking) are excellent alternatives. The Draper’s Arms Wetherspoons near the station is perfect for early arrivals!

Peterborough offers a solid selection of dining options from quick pre-match bites to proper sit-down meals. The city centre (on your route from the station to the ground) provides the widest choice, whilst London Road itself has several convenient fast-food options. The Rivergate Shopping Centre between station and stadium is particularly useful for early arrivals wanting decent café food.

The city’s position on the East Coast Main Line makes it a popular stopover, so advance booking is recommended for Saturday fixtures. The city’s position on the East Coast Main Line also makes it an ideal base for day trips to Cambridge, Stamford, or Rutland Water.

The stadium’s location beside the River Nene provides pleasant surroundings, whilst the famous Charters Bar – a converted Dutch barge moored on the river – offers one of football’s most unique pre-match drinking experiences.

Peterborough’s position on the East Coast Main Line makes it exceptionally accessible from London (under an hour!), Yorkshire, Scotland, and East Anglia, with the 15-20 minute walk from station to ground passing through the city centre offering plenty of food and drink options.

The away section in the Main Stand seats around 1,800-1,900 supporters, though views from the older Main Stand can be affected by supporting pillars and the facilities feel somewhat dated with wooden seats in the upper tier!
