Altrincham FC – Your Complete Travel Guide for 2026-27

ℹ️ 2026-27 Season Guide: All information has been researched and verified for the 2026-27 National League season. Always check altrinchamfc.com for the latest ticketing, parking and matchday updates before you travel. Note that the ground is most commonly known as Moss Lane — the J. Davidson Stadium name comes from a long-running sponsorship with a local scrap metal company and has nothing to do with the comedian.

🏟️ ABOUT THE J. DAVIDSON STADIUM (MOSS LANE)

The J Davidson Stadium, or Moss Lane as it’s more commonly known, has been Altrincham’s home since 1910 and is one of the most characterful non-league grounds in the country. Situated on the corner of Moss Lane and Golf Road, roughly ten minutes’ walk from Altrincham town centre, it has the kind of compact, close-to-the-pitch atmosphere that money genuinely cannot manufacture. The J. Davidson name, a sponsorship deal with local scrap metal processors J. Davidson, has been in place since 2013, but ask anyone in the town, and it’s still Moss Lane.

The ground has a capacity of 7,873 (up from 5,450 after the construction of the Community Sports Hall), with 1,323 seats. The layout is traditional: a Main Stand along one side flanked by the Community Sports Hall bar and the Family Stand; the Popular Side terrace running the full length of the opposite touchline; the Golf Road Terrace at the town end for home fans; and the Hale End Terrace at the far end, which is allocated to away supporters.

Away fans are housed in the Hale End Terrace, an uncovered open terrace behind the goal. On a nice day it’s a fine spot; on a wet one, you’ll want a decent waterproof. For larger visiting followings, the Hale End section of the Popular Side can also be opened to accommodate extra away supporters. The Community Sports Hall bar at the Golf Road/Moss Lane corner is open on most matchdays, though for segregated fixtures it is reserved for home supporters only; it’s worth checking in advance.

Altrincham FC have been one of non-league football’s most compelling clubs over the past decade. Founded in 1891, The Robins have a rich FA Cup history, famous for giant-killing runs in the 1970s and 80s, and have built steadily since re-establishing themselves in the National League. Under their current structure, they attract crowds of between 2,000 and 5,000, with the atmosphere at Moss Lane punching well above its weight.

Altrincham itself has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. Once a fairly unremarkable Greater Manchester commuter town, it has become one of the most talked-about food and drink destinations in northern England, anchored by its award-winning Market House and street-food market. The town is a genuine destination, and it happens to have a football ground ten minutes up the road. A good combination.

🚗 GETTING TO THE J. DAVIDSON STADIUM

The J. Davidson Stadium is a ten-minute walk from Altrincham town centre, which is itself excellently served by Metrolink tram from Manchester city centre (around 30 minutes), Northern trains, and several bus routes. The Metrolink is by far the most popular and practical option for away fans travelling from Manchester. By car, the M56 provides the main motorway access, with junction 6 being the recommended exit. There is no on-site parking, but plenty of on-street parking in the surrounding residential streets.

🗺️ STADIUM LOCATION MAP

J. Davidson Stadium Address: Moss Lane, Altrincham, WA15 8AP | Satnav: WA15 8AP

🚊 BY METROLINK & TRAIN – Manchester at Your Doorstep

The Metrolink is the Way: Altrincham is the terminus of the Metrolink Green Line from Manchester Piccadilly and the Purple Line from Bury via Manchester city centre. Trams run every 12 minutes, and the journey from Manchester city centre takes around 30 minutes. From Altrincham Interchange, the ground is a ten-minute walk along Moss Lane. It couldn’t be simpler; this is the standard option for virtually all away fans coming from Manchester and beyond.

Journey Times to Altrincham:

🔴 London Euston: Approx. 2 hrs 15 mins (to Manchester Piccadilly, then Metrolink ~30 mins)

🟠 Birmingham New Street: Approx. 1 hr 30 mins to Manchester, then Metrolink

🟡 Leeds: Approx. 1 hr to Manchester Piccadilly (direct), then Metrolink

🟢 Manchester Piccadilly: Approx. 30 mins by Metrolink (Green Line direct)

🔵 Manchester Victoria: Approx. 35 mins by Metrolink (change at Piccadilly Gardens or St Peter’s Square)

🟣 Liverpool Lime Street: Approx. 1 hr 15 mins (to Manchester Piccadilly or Oxford Road, then Metrolink)

Getting from Altrincham Interchange to the Ground

🚶 Walking (10 mins) — The Standard Route

From the front of Altrincham Interchange (behind the clock tower), Moss Lane is the first turning on the left. Walk straight along Moss Lane for roughly ten minutes; the ground is on the corner of Moss Lane and Golf Road. Note that Moss Lane is one-way heading away from the ground at the town centre end, so don’t try to take a shortcut back via Stamford New Road if you’re on foot; just follow Moss Lane the full way.

🚌 Bus Services

Buses from Manchester Piccadilly bus station include Arriva service 263 and Stagecoach X41 to Altrincham Interchange. Multiple local bus routes also serve the town. For most fans travelling from Manchester, the Metrolink is faster and more reliable than the buses.

🚂 Train (Northern Rail)

Altrincham also has a Northern Rail station adjacent to the Metrolink interchange, with services from Manchester Oxford Road and Manchester Piccadilly. Useful if you’re coming directly from a station not served by the tram network.

💡 Top Tip: Manchester city centre has the full range of pre-match options. If you want a morning in the Northern Quarter or Spinningfields before heading out to Altrincham, it’s an easy 30-minute tram ride. Alternatively, arrive early in Altrincham itself and enjoy the Market House, one of the country’s best street food markets.

🚗 BY CAR – M56 Junction 6, On-Street Parking

The J. Davidson Stadium is straightforward to reach by car from the M56. There is no car park at the ground itself, but plenty of on-street parking is available in the residential streets surrounding Moss Lane — free where not restricted by yellow lines or traffic cones. One organised matchday option is available at the Aecom business unit, further along Moss Lane (WA15 8FH), which offers paid parking on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

If You’re Driving:

  • From the South (M6/M56): Leave the M56 at junction 6 (signposted A538 Wilmslow/Hale). Take the A538 towards Hale. After approximately two miles, turn right onto Westminster Road, which becomes Bancroft Road and then runs onto Moss Lane. The ground is on your right on the corner with Golf Road.
  • From the North (M60/A56): Head south on the A56 from the M60. Pass through Sale and continue south. At Altrincham town centre, pick up Moss Lane heading away from the centre — the ground is roughly half a mile along on your right. Note that Moss Lane is one-way near the town centre end.
  • From the East (M60/A57): Head west on the A57 to Sale, then south on the A56 as above. Alternatively, from the A6, take the A555 Manchester Airport Eastern Link to join the M56 at junction 5, then continue one junction to junction 6 as above.

Parking Options:

  • On-Street (Moss Lane and surrounding streets): Plenty of free on-street parking in the residential streets around the ground — free where not restricted. Check signs carefully. Generally busy for popular fixtures so arrive early.
  • Aecom Business Unit (WA15 8FH): Organised matchday parking along Moss Lane, available Tuesdays and Saturdays. A useful backup if the streets are full.
  • Altrincham Town Centre Car Parks: Several pay-and-display car parks in the town centre, a ten-minute walk from the ground. A reasonable alternative for midweek games when street parking is tighter.

💡 Top Tip: If you’re travelling from Manchester or anywhere well connected to the Metrolink, the tram genuinely beats driving. Parking on the residential streets around Moss Lane can be competitive for bigger games and the post-match walk back is more pleasant without a car to worry about.

🍺 PUBS & DRINKS NEAR THE J. DAVIDSON STADIUM

👍 A Good Range Available: Altrincham has more excellent eating and drinking options than almost any other National League town, a direct result of the town’s remarkable transformation over the last decade. Near the ground, the King George is the go-to traditional pub. In the town centre, the Market House and several independent bars and pubs make for an outstanding pre-match experience. Away fans are generally welcome throughout. The Community Sports Hall bar at the ground is open on most matchdays but may be home-only for segregated fixtures.

🍺 Near the Ground

🍺 The King George (Moss Lane, Hale, WA15 8BA)

The closest pub to the ground, just a few minutes’ walk along Moss Lane with the Main Stand behind you, on the left just past the garage. A JW Lees outlet with a proper traditional pub feel: cask ales, Sky Sports, food served, heated patio, and a welcoming attitude towards away fans. If you want a pint close to the ground before the game, this is your first stop. Lively on matchdays, particularly for bigger fixtures.

🍺 Town Centre (10–15 mins walk or 2 mins by tram)

🏪 Altrincham Market House (Market Street, WA14 1SA)

The centrepiece of Altrincham’s food and drink revolution, a beautifully renovated Victorian market hall packed with independent street food traders, craft beer, artisan coffee, wood-fired pizza and communal tables. Won the Observer Food Monthly Best Market award and has been pulling visitors from across the north of England ever since. This is not your average matchday pre-match stop; it’s genuinely brilliant. Busy on Saturdays but worth every minute. Get there early if you want a table.

🍺 The Station Hotel (Stamford Street, WA14 1EX)

Right next to Altrincham station and confirmed as welcoming to away fans. A traditional pub in a former 1950s hotel building with real character, has regular live music, karaoke nights, cask ales on handpump, outdoor seating when the weather cooperates, and TV screens for earlier kick-offs. A solid all-round option and a natural first stop off the tram.

Distance to Stadium: 12 mins walk | Price: £

🍺 The Unicorn (Ashley Road, WA14 2DP)

Distance to Stadium: 15 mins walk | Price: £

🍺 Old Market Tavern (Old Market Place, WA14 4DN)

A well-regarded real ale pub on Old Market Place in the town centre, listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide. If you’re interested in proper cask ale rather than the Market House craft scene, this is the place to head. A proper traditional pub around a 15-minute walk from Moss Lane.

Distance to Stadium: 15 mins walk | Price: £

🍻 At the Ground

🍻 Community Sports Hall Bar

The Community Sports Hall at the Golf Road/Moss Lane corner of the ground has a bar open on all matchdays, with all proceeds going directly to the club. A genuinely good facility for a National League ground. However, on segregated matchdays it operates for home supporters only; check the club website before assuming access.

🍴 Food Options: Directly opposite the ground on Moss Lane is the Good Catch Fish and Chip Shop; it’s open until 2 pm on Saturday afternoons and from 4:30 pm on weekdays. A chippy opposite the away end is a non-league institution; don’t miss it. There are also a couple of convenience stores and a baker opposite the stadium. Inside the ground, burger vans operate on the concourse for segregated fixtures.

🏪 Market Tip: Saturday is the best day for Altrincham Market House, the full street food offering and all traders are open. Arrive around 11:30 am, grab a table before the lunchtime rush, eat well, and take the tram or walk up to Moss Lane for the afternoon. One of the best pre-match setups in the National League.

🎯 THINGS TO DO IN ALTRINCHAM

Altrincham has punched well above its weight as a destination since its town centre transformation. The Market House is the obvious centrepiece, but the town also has a good independent shopping scene, some excellent restaurants, and Dunham Massey, one of the National Trust’s most visited properties, on its doorstep. Manchester is 30 minutes away by tram if you want the full city experience.

🏪 Altrincham Market & Market House (Must Visit!)

A genuinely award-winning market that has transformed the perception of Altrincham as a destination. The outdoor market runs Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for fresh produce, antiques and local goods. The Market House, a renovated Victorian hall, has independent street food traders running daily, with artisan coffee, sourdough pizza, craft beer, slow-roasted meats, and much more. Saturday is the busiest and best day. Communal seating for 180, a buzzing atmosphere, and food that makes most football ground catering look deeply inadequate. The pre-match of dreams.

Cost: Free entry; pay per trader | Info: altrinchammarket.co.uk | Time: Allow 1–2 hours

🏰 Dunham Massey Hall & Gardens

A magnificent National Trust property two miles from Altrincham town centre, set in a 3,000-acre deer park. The Georgian mansion, the formal gardens and the deer park are all open to visitors. One of the most popular National Trust properties in the north-west and a beautiful setting for a morning walk before the game. Dogs welcome in the deer park on a lead.

Cost: NT members free; adults ~£14 | Info: nationaltrust.org.uk | Time: Allow 2–3 hours

🍻 Aether Brewery Taproom

A fiercely independent microbrewery and distillery near Altrincham with a relaxed taproom open Fridays 4–9 pm and Saturdays 2–9 pm. Their own craft beers and small-batch spirits, served direct from the brewery. For a Saturday 3 pm kick-off, the timing works perfectly; pop in after the final whistle for a post-match craft beer from the source.

Cost: Pay per drink | Info: visitaltrincham.com | Time: Post-match option

🛍️ The Stamford Quarter

Altrincham’s pedestrianised shopping area, anchored by the Stamford Quarter. A pleasant mix of independent boutiques, chains and cafés in a traffic-free setting. Good for an hour of browsing if you’ve got time before the market opens fully on a Saturday morning.

Manchester City Centre:

The Northern Quarter, Ancoats, Spinningfields, Deansgate — Manchester has world-class food, drink, culture and nightlife within 30 minutes of the ground. If you’re making a weekend of this away day, basing yourself in Manchester and taking the tram to Altrincham is the obvious move. visitmanchester.com

🏴️ THE ALTRINCHAM EXPERIENCE

🏪 Market First: Arrive early on Saturdays and head straight to the Market House for late morning. Best street food scene at any National League away day by some distance. Sort out your lunch there, then head to Moss Lane.

⚠️ Hale End is Uncovered: The away terrace at Moss Lane is open to the elements. Check the forecast and dress for it; the Fylde Coast can be blustery, and heavy November rain on an uncovered terrace is not fun without preparation.

🚊 Metrolink is Effortless: From Manchester city centre to the ground is tram plus ten-minute walk. No driving, no parking stress, no taxis. One of the most straightforward away day travel options in the National League.

🍟 Chippy Opposite: The Good Catch Fish and Chip Shop directly opposite the ground is open until 2 pm on Saturdays. Grab your chips on the way in; non-league football away days and chip shops opposite the ground are a combination that should be protected by law.

🏰 Dunham Massey Weekend: If you’re staying overnight, combine the football with a morning at Dunham Massey, one of the National Trust’s finest properties and just two miles from Altrincham. A great Saturday or Sunday morning option.

⚽ MATCHDAY EXPERIENCE

🏟️ Real Non-League Character: Moss Lane has been a football ground since 1910, and it shows. Compact, atmospheric, close to the pitch, a world away from modern purpose-built grounds. The away end is exposed, but the noise carries well around the bowl.

⚠️ Check Segregation Status: Altrincham operate a tiered system with some fixtures designated Category A. On segregated matchdays, the Community Sports Hall bar is home-only. Check the club website before travelling so you know what to expect.

🎫 Cash Turnstiles Available: Unlike some modern grounds, Altrincham offer cash turnstiles as well as online ticket purchasing. Buying online in advance is recommended to avoid queuing, but you can pay on the day if needed.

🍺 King George for a Final Pre-Match: If you’ve been in town for the market, the King George on Moss Lane is the natural last-minute pub stop, just a few minutes from the ground and welcoming to away fans.

📰 Programmes £3.50: Altrincham produce a good-quality matchday programme at £3.50, also available on their website if you miss out on the day. Worth picking up at a ground with this much history.

💭 FINAL THOUGHTS

Moss Lane is the kind of National League away day that reminds you what non-league football is about. A ground with over a century of history, surrounded by residential streets, ten minutes from a town centre that has quietly become one of the best food destinations in the north of England. The away end is open to the weather, so bring a waterproof, but the atmosphere is real, the crowd is engaged, and the ground has a character that no amount of corporate redevelopment could improve upon.

The pre-match package here is genuinely exceptional. Arrive at Altrincham by Metrolink from Manchester, head straight to the Market House for a late morning street food session at one of the country’s most celebrated town markets, wander down to the King George for a pint, pick up chips from the chippy opposite the ground, and you’re set. It’s rare for a National League away day to tick this many boxes before kick-off.

Altrincham FC themselves are a club going places, one of the most professionally run outfits in non-league football, with genuine ambitions and a community-first ethos that has been rewarded with growing attendances. The J. Davidson Stadium (Moss Lane — always Moss Lane) deserves its reputation as one of the best away day grounds at this level.

Market House, King George, Moss Lane. That’s a proper National League away day. ⚽
