Hornchurch FC – Your Complete Travel Guide for 2026-27

ℹ️ 2026-27 Season Guide: All information has been researched and verified for Hornchurch’s first ever season in the National League. Always check hornchurchfc.com for the latest ticketing, away allocation and matchday updates before you travel. Hornchurch beat Torquay United in the National League South Promotion Final in May 2026 to secure their historic first promotion to Step 1; the club has gone full-time and is actively redeveloping the Riverside side of the stadium to increase capacity. Expect changes to evolve through the season, so always check the latest matchday guide before travelling.

🏟️ ABOUT THE HORNCHURCH STADIUM

Hornchurch Stadium, despite the club’s name, it’s actually located in Upminster, not Hornchurch itself, a quirk of geography that catches plenty of first-time visitors out. It has been a sporting venue since 1956, originally opened by Hornchurch Urban District Council. It’s a combined athletics and football venue with a 400m synthetic running track, owned by Havering London Borough Council. Capacity sits at around 3,500-3,800, though this is set to grow as the club undertakes ground redevelopment ahead of life in the National League.

The layout is, by the club’s own admission, fairly basic. The clubhouse sits behind one of the goals with a terraced net to it. The Director’s Box runs along the halfway line, with a seating area on one side and a terrace on the other. The BF Mulley Stand and the Rom Valley Glass & Glazing Stand, along with adjacent partially-covered terracing, make up the main spectator areas on what is being developed as the Riverside side of the ground; this is where away fans are now housed.

Following promotion, Hornchurch chairman Alex Sharp confirmed the club is essentially adding 1,000 to the ground’s capacity, predominantly via the redevelopment of the Riverside. New electronic turnstiles have been installed at the away entrance as part of a revised two-stage entry process from Abraham Court, opposite The Windmill pub; a significant change from the previous “soft segregation” arrangement some visiting fans experienced in the National League South, where away supporters entered via the same turnstiles as home fans before making their way to a section behind the away dugout. The away allocation for league fixtures is typically up to 900, in line with National League rules.

Hornchurch FC, known as the Urchins, have a complicated and slightly contested history; the current club traces its roots to Upminster Wanderers, founded in 1923, which became Hornchurch & Upminster and then Hornchurch FC in 1961. Financial collapse in 2005 saw the club refounded as AFC Hornchurch. They play in royal blue and gold, and their promotion in 2025-26 — secured via the play-off final against Torquay United — marks the first time in the club’s history they have reached Step 1 of non-league football.

With promotion came a significant shift in approach; the club has confirmed it will move to a full-time playing model for 2026-27, alongside bringing in new off-field infrastructure and a CEO with Football League experience, as they look to establish themselves at this higher level.

🚗 GETTING TO HORNCHURCH STADIUM

Despite the club’s name, the stadium is actually in Upminster, on the eastern fringes of Greater London. It’s genuinely well connected — Upminster station (C2C and District line) is around 15-18 minutes’ walk, while Upminster Bridge tube station (District line only) is much closer at just 5-6 minutes. The Elizabeth Line also provides useful connections from central London via a change. By car, the M25 junction 29 is the standard approach, with limited stadium parking and street parking nearby.

🗺️ STADIUM LOCATION MAP

Hornchurch Stadium Address: Bridge Avenue, Upminster, RM14 2LX | Satnav: RM14 2LX

🚂 BY TRAIN & TUBE – Upminster Bridge is Right There

Genuinely Easy from London: Upminster Bridge tube station, on the District line, is just a 5-6 minute walk from the stadium; one of the shortest station-to-ground walks in the entire National League. Upminster mainline station (C2C from Fenchurch Street, plus District and Elizabeth Line connections via Romford) is a little further at 15-18 minutes, but offers more route options if you’re coming from further afield.

Journey Times to Upminster:

🔴 London Fenchurch Street: Approx. 30 mins (direct c2c)

🟠 Central London (via Elizabeth Line): Approx. 40-50 mins (change at Whitechapel/Romford)

🟡 Southend/Shoeburyness: Approx. 40-50 mins (direct c2c)

🟢 West Ham: Approx. 25 mins (District line direct)

🔵 Romford: Approx. 15 mins (c2c or bus)

Getting from the Station to Hornchurch Stadium

🚇 Upminster Bridge (District Line) — 5-6 mins, Recommended

By far the closest station. Turn right out of the station, walk under the railway bridge, and take the second right turning into Bridge Avenue. The stadium is found about 200 yards down on the right. Genuinely one of the shortest walks to a ground in the whole division.

🚂 Upminster (c2c/District/Elizabeth Line) — 15-18 mins walk

Turn left out of the station and head towards St Mary’s Lane crossroads. Turn right at the lights, continue down the hill, and take the second turning left into Bridge Avenue; the stadium is about 200 yards along on the right. Slightly longer but offers more route options, particularly the Elizabeth Line connection via Whitechapel for those coming from west or central London.

🚌 Bus

The 248, 365, 370, 646 and 652 buses all serve stops near the stadium — useful alternatives if you’d rather not walk, particularly the 248 which has a regular all-day service.

💡 Top Tip: If coming from Paddington or the west, take the Elizabeth Line to Whitechapel then change onto the District line. This avoids the need to cross central London entirely and is often quicker than going via Fenchurch Street.

🚗 BY CAR – M25 Junction 29, Street Parking Only

⚠️ Important: The car park at Hornchurch Stadium is now strictly reserved for players and officials only, except for pre-booked disabled parking spots (booked at least 24 hours in advance via matchday@hornchurchfc.com). Away fans should aim to use street parking or public transport.

If You’re Driving:

  • From the M25: Take the M25 to junction 29 onto the A127 towards London. Come off at the next major turn-off, signposted Upminster, and turn left into Hall Lane. Follow this road for about a mile and a half, passing Upminster station on your left, until you reach a major crossroads with traffic lights. Turn right into St Mary’s Lane, continue down the hill, and take the second turning on the left into Bridge Avenue. The stadium is about 200 yards down on the right.
  • From Central London: Follow the A13 or A127 eastbound towards Essex, picking up signs for Upminster as you approach the M25 interchanges, then follow the route above.

Parking Options:

  • ⚠️ Stadium Car Park: Players and officials only, except pre-booked disabled parking (email matchday@hornchurchfc.com at least 24 hours ahead).
  • Street Parking: Available along Bridge Avenue and opposite the ground on Brookdale Avenue. ⚠️ Increased traffic enforcement operates on matchdays due to issues with parking across driveways and on double yellow lines — park considerately and check for restrictions.
  • Paid Car Parks in Upminster: Several pay car parks are available in Upminster town centre if street parking near the ground is full.

💡 Top Tip: The club explicitly requests that supporters use public transport or walk where possible. Given how close Upminster Bridge tube station is to the ground, this is genuinely good advice, not just a courtesy request.

🍺 PUBS & DRINKS NEAR HORNCHURCH STADIUM

👍 The Windmill is the One: The Windmill pub, almost directly opposite Upminster Bridge station, is the away fan entrance landmark and a popular pre-match stop; it’s the pub everyone references when giving directions to the ground. The Junction, next to Upminster mainline station, is a good alternative if you’re coming from that direction instead.

🍺 Right by the Ground (Recommended)

🌪️ The Windmill (opposite Upminster Bridge station)

Almost directly opposite Upminster Bridge tube station, and the landmark referenced for the away entrance at Abraham Court. A traditional pub (previously known locally as The Bridge House) that’s the natural pre-match meeting point for away fans, just a few minutes’ walk from the ground.

Distance to Stadium: 5-6 mins walk | Price: ££

🍺 Near Upminster Station

🍺 The Junction (next to Upminster station)

A solid option if you’re arriving via the mainline Upminster station rather than Upminster Bridge. It’s  right next to the station, making it an easy first stop before the 15-18 minute walk down to the ground.

Distance to Stadium: 15-18 mins walk | Price: ££

🍴 Food Options: Upminster has a decent spread of cafes, takeaways and restaurants around the High Street and station areas, easily combined with a pre-match pint. Inside the ground, expect standard non-league concourse fare, though facilities are still developing alongside the club’s promotion-driven investment; check current options on the day.

⚠️ Worth Knowing: Given Hornchurch’s rapid rise and the redevelopment work underway, facilities both around and inside the ground are likely to keep changing through the 2026-27 season. Check the club’s latest matchday guide for the most current information before you travel.

🏨 WHERE TO STAY NEAR UPMINSTER

Upminster itself has limited dedicated accommodation, being a London suburb rather than a destination town. For most away fans, basing yourself in central London or nearby Romford and taking the train or tube out for the match is the sensible approach as you get a far wider choice of hotels and the journey to the ground is short and simple either way.

💷 Budget Options (£55-90 per night)

Premier Inn / Travelodge Romford

Several budget chain hotels in nearby Romford, a short train or bus ride from Upminster, offering reliable, affordable accommodation with good transport links to the ground.

💷💷 Mid-Range Options (£90-150 per night)

East London Hotels (Stratford/Canary Wharf area)

This part of east London/Essex won’t top anyone’s tourist itinerary, but there’s more here than you might expect; a historic windmill, genuine green space along the Ingrebourne Valley, and an interesting slice of aviation history from the area’s RAF Hornchurch days. Central London, of course, is also easily reached if you want to extend the day.

🪂 Upminster Windmill

A genuinely well-preserved smock mill, one of the finest surviving examples in the country and a striking landmark in the town. Worth a look if you’re exploring Upminster before or after the match — check current opening times for tours as these are typically limited to specific open days.

✈️ RAF Hornchurch Heritage Centre

Tells the complete history of the former Sutton Farm aerodrome, which became RAF Hornchurch, from its opening in 1915 to closure in 1962. A fascinating piece of local aviation history, particularly the airfield’s role during the Battle of Britain. A worthwhile stop for history enthusiasts.

🏴️ THE HORNCHURCH EXPERIENCE

🏆 Historic First Season: Hornchurch’s promotion to the National League is the first time in the club’s history they’ve reached this level. Expect a real sense of occasion and ambition around every home fixture in 2026-27.

🏗️ Ground Under Development: Capacity is being expanded via Riverside redevelopment ahead of the new season. Facilities and away arrangements may continue to evolve through the campaign. Always check the latest matchday guide.

📍 It’s in Upminster, Not Hornchurch: A genuine source of confusion for first-time visitors; the ground sits in Upminster, with Upminster Bridge tube station just five minutes’ walk away.

🚇 Five-Minute Tube Walk: Upminster Bridge station to the gate in 5-6 minutes is about as easy as away day logistics get. The District line makes this one of the most accessible National League grounds for London-based fans.

🐕 No Dogs: A council ruling means dogs are not permitted inside the stadium, except assistance dogs. Plan accordingly if you usually bring yours along.

⚽ MATCHDAY EXPERIENCE

🏟️ Basic but Evolving: This is a genuinely modest ground by National League standards; an athletics-and-football venue with a synthetic track around the pitch. Investment is underway, but don’t expect Football League polish in just yet.

⚠️ New Entry Process: Electronic turnstiles and a revised away entrance via Abraham Court are new for the National League era. Buy your ticket online in advance and follow club volunteer directions on the day; the old “soft segregation” system has been replaced.

🚗 No Stadium Parking: Players and officials only. Use Upminster Bridge tube (5-6 mins) or street parking around Bridge Avenue/Brookdale Avenue, being mindful of increased traffic enforcement.

🐕 No Dogs Permitted: Council ruling applies stadium-wide, with the exception of assistance dogs.

🍺 The Windmill First: Right opposite Upminster Bridge station and the away entrance landmark — the obvious choice for a pre-match pint before heading into the ground.

💭 FINAL THOUGHTS

Hornchurch Stadium represents one of the most genuinely fresh stories in this season’s National League; a club making history with their first ever promotion to Step 1, investing heavily in their ground and going full-time as they look to establish themselves at this level. Don’t expect a polished, purpose-built venue just yet; the athletics track, basic clubhouse and ongoing Riverside redevelopment mean this is a club very much in transition, with facilities likely to keep evolving through the season.

What this away day lacks in stadium polish, it more than makes up for in accessibility. Upminster Bridge tube station, five minutes from the gate, makes this one of the easiest National League grounds to reach for London-based fans; no car needed, no long walks, no complicated connections. The Windmill pub, right opposite the station, is the obvious pre-match spot, and the wider Upminster area — including the historic windmill and the green spaces of the Ingrebourne Valley — offers a bit more than you might expect from an outer-London suburb.

Given how new all of this is — the electronic turnstiles, the revised away entrance, the Riverside expansion — this is a guide worth treating as a snapshot rather than gospel. Check the club’s latest matchday information before you travel, and expect things to look a little different as the season progresses and Hornchurch continue to build for life in the National League.

A club on the rise, a ground in transition, and one of the easiest tube journeys in the National League. ⚽
