🟤💙 ABOUT TURF MOOR

Turf Moor is one of English football’s most historic and characterful stadiums, home to Burnley FC since 1883. Located in the heart of Burnley town, just a short walk from the town centre, this 21,944-capacity ground is the second-oldest continuously used football stadium in the Football League (only Preston’s Deepdale is older).

Turf Moor is set in a spectacular location, with the Pennine Hills providing a dramatic backdrop. On clear days, the views of the surrounding moorland are truly stunning. The stadium has been systematically developed over recent decades, with the impressive James Hargreaves Stand (opened 1996) towering over the ground.

The Cricket Field Stand houses away supporters, whilst the Bob Lord Stand and David Fishwick Stand complete the tight, atmospheric bowl. When Burnley are in form, and the Clarets faithful are roaring, Turf Moor creates one of English football’s most intimidating atmospheres.

Burnley FC – The Clarets – is one of England’s founding football clubs, established in 1882 and a founding member of the Football League in 1888. Burnley have won the English top-flight championship twice (1920-21 and 1959-60) and the FA Cup once (1914), and have a proud history as a traditional Lancashire mill-town club. The famous claret-and-blue colours have been worn since 1910.

Burnley’s greatest era came in the late 1950s and early 1960s under legendary manager Harry Potts, winning the league title in 1959-60 with a team featuring Jimmy McIlroy, Jimmy Adamson, and John Connelly. More recently, Burnley have become renowned for their remarkable ability to bounce between divisions whilst maintaining financial sustainability and developing talent. The club’s loyal supporters are fiercely passionate about their town and their team – East Lancashire rivalries with Blackburn and Preston run deep. Turf Moor represents proper traditional English football in an honest working town.

Getting from Station to Turf Moor

🚶 Walking from Manchester Road Station (10-15 minutes) – Recommended!

Exit station onto Manchester Road, turn right, follow Manchester Road into the town centre, continue onto Yorkshire Street, then turn right onto Harry Potts Way to Turf Moor. Straightforward walk, well signposted, safe route through the town centre. You’ll see the James Hargreaves Stand towering ahead as you approach!

🚶 Walking from Central Station (10-15 minutes)

Exit the station onto Centenary Way, head towards the town centre, then follow Yorkshire Street to Harry Potts Way. Similar distance and equally straightforward. Both stations work well!

🚌 Bus (5-10 minutes, £2-£3)

Local buses run from Burnley bus station in the town centre to areas near Turf Moor. Check burnleybus.co.uk for routes. Honestly, walking is easier – it’s not far!

🚕 Taxi (5 minutes, £5-£7)

Taxis are available outside both stations. Very short journey to Turf Moor. The walk is pleasant though, so only needed if carrying heavy bags or the weather’s terrible!

💡 Top Tip: Arrive at Burnley Manchester Road station 2-3 hours before kick-off. Walk into the town centre (5 mins), explore Burnley’s pubs and grab lunch, then walk to Turf Moor around 90 minutes before kick-off. 🚗 BY CAR – Reasonable Parking Options

⚠️ Parking Information: Turf Moor has better parking facilities than many grounds, with several car parks around the stadium and street parking in the surrounding areas. However, these fill up on big matchdays, and post-match exit traffic can be slow. The walk from either railway station (10-15 mins) is genuinely pleasant and recommended if arriving by train.

If You Drive:

  • Directions: From M65 Junction 10, follow signs to Burnley town centre and Turf Moor Stadium, well signposted on approach
  • Official Stadium Car Parks: Cricket Field Car Park behind away end (£7-£10, limited spaces), arrive 90+ minutes early
  • Town Centre Car Parks: Pioneer Place, Curzon Street, Centenary Way multi-storeys (£5-£8 for 5-6 hours) – 10-15 min walk to ground, easier exit!
  • Street Parking: Surrounding residential streets have some unrestricted parking – arrive 2+ hours early, check signs carefully
  • Barden Lane Area: Streets around Barden Lane (near the ground) have parking opportunities – arrive early, check restrictions
  • Private Driveways: Local residents offer parking £8-£12 – book in advance at yourparkingspace.co.uk or parkopedia.co.uk

🚨 Our Advice: Parking at Turf Moor is more manageable than many grounds, but arriving 90+ minutes early gives you the best chance of finding space and exploring Burnley before the match. Post-match exit takes 20-30 minutes. Alternatively, the train connections to Burnley Manchester Road are good, and the 10-15 minute walk to the ground is easy and puts you in the matchday atmosphere.

🍺 PUBS & DRINKS NEAR TURF MOOR

⚠️ IMPORTANT ADVICE: Pubs immediately around Turf Moor can be Clarets strongholds and may not always welcome away fans in colours, especially for big fixtures or local derbies (particularly Blackburn). The safest approach is to drink in Burnley town centre (10-15 minutes’ walk from the stadium), where there are more pubs with mixed clientele and Wetherspoons options. Exercise discretion with away colours and keep groups small.

⚠️ Not accessible to away fans

⚠️ Pubs Immediately Around Ground

Various pubs within 5 minutes of Turf Moor (The Turf Hotel, etc.) are generally Clarets’ strongholds. Exercise extreme caution with away colours, especially for derby matches against Blackburn. Better to stick with town centre options!

⚠️ Our Advice: Stay in the town centre where it’s safer!

🍔 Food Options: Burnley town centre has decent options – various chains and independents around the Market Square area, fish & chip shops, and cafes. Try a traditional Lancashire steak pudding (meat pie) if you can find it – proper northern comfort food! Near the stadium, options are limited to a few takeaways. Stadium concourses have pies (including the famous Holland’s pies), burgers, and hot food.

🥧 Local Speciality: Holland’s Pies – a Lancashire institution! Available at the ground and throughout Burnley.

Visiting Turf Moor is like experiencing one of English football’s most historic and traditional grounds in the heart of proper Lancashire mill-town territory. Opened in 1883, this is the second-oldest continuously used football stadium in the Football League, after Preston’s Deepdale, with over 141 years of footballing history.
