Complete Away Day Travel Guide

🟤💙 ABOUT VILLA PARK

Villa Park is one of English football’s most historic and atmospheric stadiums, and home to Aston Villa since 1897. Located in the Aston area of Birmingham, approximately 2 miles north of the city centre, this 42,640-capacity ground has a history spanning over 127 years of football. Villa Park is famous for its distinctive four-stand bowl design, with steep stands that bring supporters close to the pitch, creating an intimidating atmosphere.

The magnificent Trinity Road Stand, Holte End, North Stand, and Doug Ellis Stand combine tradition with modern facilities. Villa Park has hosted FA Cup semi-finals, England internationals, and the 2012 Olympic football tournament, testament to its status as one of England’s great football venues. When Villa are in form, and the Holte End is roaring, this is one of the Premier League’s most atmospheric grounds.

Aston Villa – The Villans or The Lions – are one of England’s most successful and historic clubs, founded in 1874. Villa have won seven English top-flight championships (last in 1980-81), seven FA Cups, five League Cups, and the European Cup/Champions League in 1982 (beating Bayern Munich 1-0 in Rotterdam). They’re one of only five English clubs to have won Europe’s premier trophy. The famous claret-and-blue colours have been worn since 1887, and Villa Park has been their home since 1897.

Villa’s golden era under Ron Saunders and then Tony Barton included league championships and European glory, with legendary players such as Peter Withe, Gary Shaw, Dennis Mortimer, and later Dwight Yorke. In recent years, Villa has returned to the Premier League under ambitious ownership, with Champions League qualification in 2023-24 marking a thrilling return to Europe’s elite. Villa supporters are passionate, knowledgeable, and fiercely proud of their club’s illustrious history. The Second City derby against Birmingham City and matches against local rivals West Brom create intense atmospheres at Villa Park.

🚗 BY CAR – Challenging But Possible

⚠️ Parking Warning: Parking around Villa Park is challenging on matchdays, with most streets being residents-only. The local train from New Street to Aston (5 minutes, every 10-15 minutes) is genuinely much easier unless you’re staying in Birmingham and parking at your hotel. Traffic congestion around the ground can be severe on matchdays.

If You Must Drive:

  • Directions: From M6 Junction 6, take A38(M) Aston Expressway towards city centre, exit at Dartmouth Middleway (A4540), follow signs to Aston/Villa Park
  • Street Parking: Very limited, mostly residents-only, within 1 mile of the ground. Arrive 3+ hours early if attempting street parking in the surrounding areas
  • Aston Hall Car Park: Trinity Road near Aston Hall (£8-£10, limited spaces) – 10-minute walk to Villa Park
  • Private Driveways: Local residents offer parking £10-£15 – book in advance at yourparkingspace.co.uk or parkopedia.co.uk
  • City Centre Multi-Storeys: Park in Birmingham city centre (Bullring, Mailbox – £8-£15), then take the train to Aston. Easier exit after the match!
  • Park at Hotels: Some hotels near M6 Junction 6 offer parking – drive to the hotel, then taxi/bus to the ground

🚨 Our Advice: Take the train to Birmingham New Street, then the 5-minute local train to Aston station. Trains run every 10-15 minutes, cost £2.50, and the walk from Aston station to Villa Park is easy and safe. Driving means dealing with traffic, expensive/difficult parking, and post-match congestion. The train is genuinely easier!
