⚽ ABOUT THE MEMS PRIESTFIELDS STADIUM
The MEMS Priestfields Stadium, or just “Priestfields” to everyone who’s been, is one of English football’s most historically significant grounds. Tucked into a residential neighbourhood in Gillingham, Kent, it’s been home to the Gills since 1893, making it one of the oldest continuously used football grounds in the country. Capacity is 11,582, all seated.
Three sides were rebuilt in the late 1990s – the imposing two-tier Medway Stand, the Gordon Road Stand and the Rainham End. The fourth side, the Brian Moore Stand, has been a temporary scaffold structure since 2003. That’s where away fans go. It has no roof, so bring a coat for winter matches – it can get cold and wet. The views are decent despite the basic surroundings.
Founded in 1893 as New Brompton FC, the club became Gillingham in 1912. The Gills are known for one of the greatest play-off final storylines in Football League history – leading Manchester City 2-0 with two minutes left at Wembley in 1999, only for City to score twice in stoppage time and win on penalties. They bounced back brilliantly, winning promotion the following year.
Gillingham’s finest era came between 2000 and 2005, when they played Championship football for the first time – their highest-ever level – and reached the FA Cup quarter-finals in 2000. Back in League Two for 2025-26, the Gills have twice won the fourth-tier title (1964 and 2013). Local rivalries are fiercest with Millwall, Southend United and MK Dons.
New owner Brad Galinson acquired a majority shareholding in 2022 and has invested in improvements, including LED boards, a new club shop and plans for the new Fanzone. The Brian Moore Stand is finally scheduled for redevelopment in the medium term, and a new stadium at Mill Hill remains a long-term ambition. For now, Priestfield remains a ground with genuine character and a proud, vocal home support.

💡 Top Tip: The Supporters’ Club car parks are the best-organised matchday option. Arrive at least 90 minutes before kick-off to secure a space, and bring £5 in cash for the parking fee, even though the stadium itself is completely cashless.
🍺 PUBS & DRINKS NEAR THE MEMS PRIESTFIELDS STADIUM
⚠️ AWAY FAN ADVICE: The pub scene near Priestfield requires a little planning. The Cricketers on Sturdee Avenue is home fans only – avoid this one. The designated away pub is The Fleur de Lis on Gillingham Road (police-designated). For the very best pre-match experience with real ale, the town centre’s Will Adams is the standout choice and warmly welcomes away supporters. Rochester (2 train stops) is an excellent alternative for a longer pre-match session.
🍺 Designated Away Pub
🍺 The Fleur de Lis – 46 Gillingham Road, ME7 4RR (10 mins from stadium)
The police-designated away fans pub is the most reliable option near the ground. A fair-sized corner pub with a local feel, Sky and BT Sports, hot and cold snacks and a family-friendly atmosphere. To find it: from the away turnstiles, walk down to the bottom of Priestfield Road, turn left, then right at the roundabout onto Gillingham Road. The pub is on the right. Always check opening times for early kick-offs.
🍺 Town Centre Recommendations (10–12 mins from ground)
🍺 The Will Adams – 73 Saxton Street, ME7 5EG ⭐ TOP PICK ⭐
The absolute gem of Gillingham’s pub scene and a legend among away fans. Landlord Pete (a lifelong Gills season ticket holder) welcomes home and away fans alike, with brilliant, friendly banter guaranteed. A real ale oasis featured in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for over 30 consecutive years – the pub is named after Will Adams, a Gillingham-born mariner who became a Samurai in Japan. Pool, darts, jukebox, outstanding rotating ales and genuine community warmth. Opens early on matchdays. Named after the mariner on the brilliant wall mural. Do not miss this one.
🍺 Past & Present Micropub – Skinner Street, Gillingham town centre
A short walk from both the Will Adams and the station, this real ale micropub has earned a loyal following from away fans. Small, characterful and with a welcoming mixed atmosphere of home and away supporters. The perfect companion to the Will Adams for a proper pre-match real ale circuit. A great find for beer lovers making the trip to Priestfield.
🍺 The Southern Belle – 170 High Street, ME7 1AJ (opposite station exit)
Directly opposite the exit to Gillingham railway station – impossible to miss as you arrive. Welcomes away fans and gets a mixed crowd on matchdays. Convenient for a quick pint as you arrive before heading to the Will Adams or the ground. Small and can get crowded on match afternoons, so don’t linger if you’re tight for time.
🍺 Rochester Town Centre – Pre-Match Option (2 train stops, 7 mins)
Rochester is a brilliant pre-match destination. Two stops from Gillingham on the train, with a gorgeous medieval High Street lined with pubs and restaurants. The Wetherspoons in Rochester city centre is a reliable away fan option, and the historic streets have plenty of characterful independent pubs and bars to explore. Arrive early, explore Rochester, then take the short train to Gillingham for kick-off.
⛔ AVOID – The Cricketers, Sturdee Avenue (ME7 2JR)
Home fans only. Ticket checks are carried out at the door. Do not attempt to enter in away colours. It’s about 10 minutes from the stadium – head to the Fleur de Lis or town centre options instead.
🍔 FOOD NEAR THE MEMS PRIESTFIELDS STADIUM
🍔 At the Ground
Stadium Concourse Kiosks
MEMS Priestfield’s food outlets have been upgraded in recent years. The Rainham End concourse serves a range of Italian, Chinese and traditional British football fare. The Medway Stand kiosks offer the usual matchday staples – burgers, hot dogs, pies, chips and hot drinks. The Brian Moore Stand (away end) has its own kiosks. Cashless only throughout – no cash accepted anywhere inside the stadium.
🍔 Near the Ground
Fish & Chip Shop – near Gillingham Road roundabout
There’s a handy chippy near the roundabout at the bottom of Priestfield Road (where the old Livingstone Arms used to stand). Perfect timing for a pre-match feed after the walk from the station or the Fleur de Lis – chips in hand as you head to the away turnstiles.
Gillingham High Street & Town Centre – near the station
The High Street has a good selection of food options within minutes of the station – Subway, McDonald’s, an independent kebab house called Ozzy Grill & Fish Bar and a Sainsbury’s Local on the corner of Linden Road and Gillingham Road. All solid pre-match options if you’re arriving early and want something more substantial than stadium food.
Rochester High Street – pre-match dining (2 stops by train)
Rochester’s medieval High Street has a genuinely excellent range of restaurants, cafés and pubs serving food. For a proper pre-match meal rather than a burger, it’s well worth arriving early and eating in Rochester before taking the short train to Gillingham. Charles Dickens’ country – the atmosphere is something else.
🏨 WHERE TO STAY NEAR THE MEMS PRIESTFIELDS STADIUM
Gillingham itself has limited hotel options, but the wider Medway towns area – Rochester, Chatham and Strood – provides good coverage. London is under an hour by train and remains an option for those wanting city amenities. For the most convenient base with the most to do, Rochester is the standout overnight choice.

All three London terminal areas have excellent hotel choices at all price points.

⚽ MATCHDAY EXPERIENCE
⚠️ Cashless Venue: MEMS Priestfields is fully cashless. Cards and contactless only at all kiosks, the bar and turnstiles inside the ground. Bring a working card – no cash accepted anywhere inside. However, the matchday car parks are cash only (£5), so bring both.
🛺 The Brian Moore Stand – Wrap Up Warm: Away fans are housed in the open-to-the-elements Brian Moore Stand. This temporary scaffold structure has been in place since 2003. There’s no roof – in autumn and winter, it can be genuinely cold and wet. Bring layers and a waterproof jacket. The view of the pitch from the stand is actually decent.
⏰ Turnstiles Open: From 1:30 pm for a 3 pm kick-off (90 minutes before). Away fans access via the alleyway at the end of Priestfield Road (Balmoral Road end). Follow matchday signage and steward directions from Gillingham station.
🍺 Alcohol in the Away End: Alcohol is served in the away end concourse at MEMS Priestfield. A genuine bonus for away fans – take advantage before kick-off and at half-time. Cashless only at the bar.
📰 Matchday Programme: A 48-page programme is available for around £3.50 from sellers inside each stand, at kiosks and from the matchday shop on Gordon Road. Any remaining copies can be purchased from the Gillingham retail website after the match.
♿ Disabled Access: Accessible facilities are available around the ground, though provision in the Brian Moore Stand (away end) is limited. Disabled supporters should contact the club’s Disability Liaison Officer in advance. Visually impaired fans can request radio headsets (also advance booking required). Contact the club on 01634 300 000 or via gillinghamfootballclub.com.
🏟️ Fanzone Under Construction: Gillingham have begun demolition work behind the Rainham End to build a new Fanzone capable of holding up to 900 supporters. This is expected to feature seating, kiosks, and an entertainment area, open on non-matchdays as well. Check the club’s website for the latest updates on 2025-26 opening times.
💭 FINAL THOUGHTS
MEMS Priestfields Stadium is a proper, characterful League Two ground with more than 130 years of football history written into its bones. Yes, the Brian Moore Stand is open to the elements, and you’ll want a coat for winter visits. But the intimate atmosphere, the 10-minute walk from the station and the quality of the pre-match experience – especially at the legendary Will Adams – make this one of the more enjoyable away days in the division.
Use the train – it’s the obvious choice here. Get the Will Adams in first (ask about their rotating ales), grab fish and chips near the ground, and soak up the proper football atmosphere at Priestfield. If you can make a weekend of it, Rochester, two stops up the line, is one of the most rewarding historic cities in the southeast. The castle, the cathedral and the Dickens connections make it genuinely special.
Remember: the stadium is entirely cashless, but the car parks are cash only. Have your card ready inside and coins/notes for parking. Dress for the weather in the Brian Moore Stand. And if you haven’t heard the story of Gillingham 2-0 Manchester City, 1999 Wembley play-off final – look it up. One of the great moments in Football League history, and the Gills still feel strongly about those five minutes of injury time.
