Rochdale AFC – Your Complete Travel Guide for 2026-27
ℹ️ 2026-27 Season Guide: All information has been researched and verified for Rochdale’s return to League Two. Always check rochdaleafc.co.uk for the latest ticketing, parking and matchday updates before you travel. Rochdale earned promotion via the National League play-offs in May 2026, beating Boreham Wood on penalties in the Wembley final, a dramatic return to the EFL after three seasons away.
🏟️ ABOUT THE CROWN OIL ARENA
The Crown Oil Arena, still widely known to fans simply as Spotland, is one of football’s most likeable grounds. Tucked into the Spotland district of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, it has a compact, no-nonsense charm that is very much at home in League Two. The stadium has a capacity of 10,249 and is shared with Rochdale Hornets Rugby League Club. It has been Rochdale AFC’s home since 1920, and the naming rights have been held by local fuel company Crown Oil since 2016, with the deal extended through to at least 2028.
The ground has four stands: the David Kilpatrick Main Stand (south side, housing offices and changing rooms), the Pearl Street Stand (east), the Sandy Lane End (the terraced, vocal home end to the west), and the Willbutts Lane Stand (north), which runs the full length of the pitch and is where away fans are housed. That side-on position gives the Willbutts Lane Stand excellent views with no obstructions, far better than a behind-the-goal end. There are also two bars at the ground, the Ratcliffe Bar and Studds Bar, both open to away fans.
Trees visible above the Sandy Lane terracing, the stands’ close proximity to the pitch, and the intimate scale all contribute to a proper, old-school football atmosphere. Rochdale perhaps won’t win any awards for glamour, but Spotland has genuine character, and that counts for a lot.
Rochdale AFC were formed in 1907, taking over Spotland from the local rugby club. Known as The Dale, they play in blue and white and hold one of football’s more unusual records: they spent more consecutive seasons in the English Football League without reaching the top two divisions or dropping into non-league than any other club. Their finest hour came in 1962 when, as a fourth-tier club, they reached the League Cup Final, the first team from the bottom division ever to do so.
After three seasons in the National League, Rochdale made it back to the EFL in dramatic fashion in May 2026, winning a penalty shoot-out at Wembley against Boreham Wood to claim the second promotion spot. It was a moment that meant everything to a club and town that had been through the mill. The 2026-27 season marks their return to League Two, and the Crown Oil Arena will be bouncing.

🚗 BY CAR – Straightforward from the M62
The Crown Oil Arena is just over two miles from junction 20 of the M62, making it one of the more straightforward grounds to reach by car from across the north of England. The route from the motorway is essentially a straight road to the ground. Follow signs for Rochdale after leaving the M62 and the stadium is clearly signposted.
If You’re Driving:
- From the South/West (M62 J20): Leave the M62 at junction 20 and follow the A627(M) towards Rochdale. Bear left past the retail park, go under the bridge and continue straight along Roch Valley Way. At the traffic lights, turn right onto Sandy Lane (the Cemetery pub will be on the corner). The stadium is on your right.
- From the East (M62 J21, Milnrow): A useful alternative if approaching from the east and helps avoid queuing traffic heading back to J20 after the game.
- From the North (M66/A56): Head south on the M66, join the A627(M) and follow signs for Rochdale town centre, then follow the Spotland/stadium signs.
Parking Options:
- Oulder Hill Community School (OL11 5EF): Parking available approximately half a mile from the stadium on Greave Avenue. A popular and reliable option for away fans.
- Street Parking (A680 Edenfield Road): Street parking can be found along the main A680, a 5-10 minute walk from the ground. Check signs carefully; streets immediately around the stadium have resident-only restrictions.
- Note: The stadium car park is for permit holders only. Don’t assume you can park there on the day.
💡 Top Tip: If heading home eastwards after the game, aim for junction 21 (Milnrow) rather than junction 20 — it avoids the traffic queuing back towards the motorway and is a faster route for those heading towards Yorkshire or the east.
🍺 PUBS & DRINKS NEAR CROWN OIL ARENA
Good News for Away Fans: Rochdale has a well-deserved reputation for welcoming visiting supporters. The pubs near the ground are genuinely good, particularly the Cemetery Hotel, which has legendary status on the lower-league away day circuit. Home and away fans tend to mix without issue. There are also two bars inside the Crown Oil Arena itself that welcome away supporters.
🍺 Near the Ground (Recommended for Away Fans)
🍺 The Cemetery Hotel — “The Cem” (Sandy Lane, OL11 5DR)
Quite simply one of the best football away day pubs in the lower leagues. This Grade II listed Edwardian pub has a nationally important historic interior, six hand-pumped ales, a Timothy Taylor’s “Champions Club” accreditation for the quality of its cask beer, and an atmosphere that has made it a pilgrimage destination for away fans across the country. It sits right on the corner as you approach from the M62, and many regulars at this ground admit they enjoy the pub more than the game. Away fans are very welcome. Brilliant.
Distance to Stadium: 5 mins walk | Price: £
🍺 The Bowling Green (Spotland Road, OL12 7AN)
A traditional local pub on Spotland Road, a short walk from the ground. Generally welcoming to away fans and a solid option if the Cemetery Hotel is full. Real ale served, friendly atmosphere.
Distance to Stadium: 8 mins walk | Price: £
🍺 Rochdale Sports Club (Willbutts Lane, OL11 5AQ)
About five minutes’ walk from the Crown Oil Arena, this sports club is a reliable pre-match option for away supporters. Sky Sports and TNT Sports on multiple screens, hot food served, and a relaxed atmosphere. A reasonable alternative if you want to watch earlier kick-offs before heading to the ground.
Distance to Stadium: 5 mins walk | Price: £
🍻 Inside the Ground
🍻 Ratcliffe Bar & Studds Bar
Two bars operate inside the Crown Oil Arena on matchdays, both typically open to away supporters. The Ratcliffe Bar, at the front end of the stadium, has a proper clubhouse feel with screens showing sport. Home and away fans have been known to mix happily in here. Studds Bar is below the Pearl Street Stand. Worth checking on the day as access may vary depending on the fixture.
🏙️ In Town (15-20 Mins from Ground)
🍺 The Regal Moon (The Esplanade, OL16 1AE)
Rochdale’s Wetherspoons, centrally located in the town. A reliable option if you arrive in town before heading up to the ground; the usual cheap drinks, food all day, and often full of football fans. As ‘Spoons go, it’s a decent one with a bit of character in the building.
Distance to Stadium: Town centre (bus or taxi to ground) | Price: £
🍴 Food Options: There is a fish and chip shop directly opposite the Willbutts Lane Stand away entrance; meat and potato pie and chips is the classic order. Pies and burgers are also available on the concourse inside the ground. The town centre has the usual range of fast food chains and independents if you’re arriving early.
🍺 Cem Tip: The Cemetery Hotel gives season ticket holders a 20p discount on drinks, and this discount also extends to away supporters with a season ticket. Worth knowing if you’ve got one in your pocket.

⚠️ Booking Advice
For most away fans, basing yourself in Manchester and taking the train is the smartest move. The journey is just 18-22 minutes from Manchester Victoria; trains are frequent, and Manchester offers a full city’s worth of options for eating, drinking, and sightseeing. Rochdale’s own accommodation options are fine but a bit limited; Manchester is the obvious upgrade.
🎯 THINGS TO DO IN ROCHDALE
Rochdale is a town with a serious story to tell. Birthplace of the co-operative movement, home to a remarkable Victorian town hall, and the starting point for one of England’s most ambitious canal crossings, it is truly far more interesting than its reputation might suggest. The town has been Greater Manchester’s Town of Culture and its regenerating centre has real energy. If you’re making a day of it, there’s plenty to explore.
🛖 Rochdale Pioneers Museum (Must Visit!)
Rochdale is the birthplace of the modern co-operative movement, and this museum marks the spot. The original Rochdale Equitable Pioneers set up their first co-operative shop at 31 Toad Lane in 1844, laying the foundations for a movement that now has over a billion members worldwide. The museum is genuinely fascinating, free to enter, packed with artefacts, and staffed by people who clearly love telling the story. A proper hidden gem.

🏛️ Rochdale Town Hall
One of the finest Victorian Gothic town halls in England, built in 1871 and a genuine architectural showstopper. Guided tours are occasionally available; check with Visit Rochdale before your visit.

⛵ Rochdale Canal
First opened in 1804, the Rochdale Canal was the original trans-Pennine waterway, an extraordinary feat of engineering that crossed the Pennines for the first time. Restored and fully reopened in 2002, the canal now stretches 32 miles and offers excellent walking along the towpath. The Rochdale stretch runs through the town centre and out into open countryside. A good leg-stretch if you’ve arrived early.

🎤 Lisa Stansfield: Rochdale’s most famous musical export. The Highland Laddie pub near the ground even has a local legend about a young Lisa Stansfield playing pool there in the 1980s. She won, apparently.
🏙️ Manchester Next Door: Just 12 minutes by train from Manchester Victoria. Combine your away day with a few hours exploring one of England’s great cities; the Northern Quarter for food and drink is particularly recommended.
🍺 The Cemetery Hotel: Don’t just drive past it. This is a genuine football away-day institution; a Grade II-listed pub with extraordinary interiors and some of the best-kept cask ale in the north of England. Make the time.
🚦 Post-Match Traffic: If driving home eastwards, head for junction 21 rather than junction 20. The queue back to J20 after a game can be slow — the Milnrow exit saves time for those heading back towards Yorkshire.
⚽ MATCHDAY EXPERIENCE
🏟️ Proper Football Ground: Spotland is a genuine lower-league gem, compact, close to the pitch, and with a real atmosphere. The Willbutts Lane Stand gives away fans an excellent side-on view with no obstructions.
🎟️ Buy Tickets in Advance: With Rochdale back in the EFL and home fans energised, tickets for popular fixtures will sell quickly. A small price premium applies on matchdays, so booking online in advance is the sensible move.
🚕 Pre-Book Your Return Taxi: After the final whistle, demand for taxis spikes. Ring ahead — Streamline (01706 644104) or Millennium (01706 646465) are both reliable and used regularly by away supporters.

💭 FINAL THOUGHTS
The Crown Oil Arena, or Spotland, as it will always be known, is the kind of football ground that reminds you why the lower leagues matter. Compact, close to the pitch, and with a proper northern atmosphere, it has real character in a way that no modern stadium can manufacture.
The Willbutts Lane Stand is a genuinely good place to watch football from side-on, unobstructed, with the Sandy Lane End terrace packed with home fans across the pitch making it loud when the Dale are in full voice. Away fans have always been welcomed here, and that tradition of hospitality hasn’t changed.
The Crown Oil Arena’s location means the pre-match pub scene is the thing, specifically, The Cemetery Hotel. If you haven’t been to “The Cem” before, put it at the top of your list. A Grade II listed Edwardian pub with six hand-pulled ales, a stunning historic interior, and a welcome that extends warmly to away supporters, it is considered by many lower-league regulars to be one of the finest football away day pubs in the country. Combined with the chip shop opposite the away end and the bars inside the ground, you certainly won’t go hungry or thirsty.
Rochdale itself is a town worth a little more time than it usually gets. The Pioneers Museum on Toad Lane is a free and genuinely fascinating look at the birthplace of the co-operative movement. The Victorian town hall is one of the finest in England. And if you’re arriving by train, Manchester is just 20 minutes away, putting a world-class city on your doorstep. The Crown Oil Arena and everything around it makes for a solid, enjoyable, traditional away day. Rochdale are back in the Football League. Go and welcome them.
Spotland in the EFL. Just as it should be. ⚽
