🔴 ABOUT OLD TRAFFORD

Old Trafford is one of the world’s most iconic stadiums, home to Manchester United since 1910. Known worldwide as “The Theatre of Dreams”, this legendary ground has witnessed countless historic moments across 115+ years. With a capacity of 74,310, Old Trafford is the largest club stadium in the United Kingdom and one of the most atmospheric venues in world football. The stadium has been systematically developed over the decades, with the most significant recent expansion being the enlargement of the North, East, and West stands, whilst maintaining its distinctive character and intimidating atmosphere.

Manchester United – The Red Devils – are English football’s most successful club with 20 league championships, 13 FA Cups, 6 League Cups, 3 European Cups/Champions Leagues, and countless other honours. From the Busby Babes tragedy and rebirth to the Treble-winning 1998-99 season under Sir Alex Ferguson, from Best, Law and Charlton through Cantona, Giggs and Scholes to Ronaldo, Rooney and beyond, United’s history is intertwined with football’s greatest moments.

The famous red shirts have been worn since 1902, the Red Devils nickname was adopted in the 1960s, and the club’s motto “Youth, Courage, Success” reflects the philosophy established by Sir Matt Busby. The Stretford End is one of football’s most famous stands – home to United’s most passionate supporters who create an incredible atmosphere. Old Trafford isn’t just a stadium; it’s a shrine to football excellence where legends are made, and history is written.

Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria are the main railway stations with connections from across the UK.

🗺️ STADIUM LOCATION MAP

Old Trafford Address: Sir Matt Busby Way, Old Trafford, Manchester, M16 0RA

🚂 BY TRAIN – The Recommended Choice

Why Trains Work: Manchester has two main stations – Piccadilly and Victoria – both with excellent connections from across the UK. From either station, you can catch the Metrolink tram directly to Old Trafford (15-20 mins) or walk through the city centre (25-30 mins from Piccadilly). The Metrolink is frequent, reliable, and drops you right by the stadium. Manchester Oxford Road station is also well connected by tram.

🚂 Manchester Piccadilly Station: Main railway terminus

  • Distance to Old Trafford: 2 miles (15-20 min Metrolink tram / 25-30 min walk)
  • Direct Services From: London Euston (2hrs 10mins), Liverpool (50mins), Leeds (1hr), Birmingham (1hr 30mins), Edinburgh (3hrs 30mins)
  • Metrolink to Old Trafford: Catch the Altrincham line tram from Piccadilly towards Altrincham, alight at Old Trafford stop (£3-£4 single)
  • Manchester Trams (Metrolink): tfgm.com

🚂 Manchester Victoria Station: Alternative mainline station

  • Services: Northern England destinations, useful for Yorkshire and Lancashire
  • Metrolink Connection: Victoria Station has a Metrolink platform – change to the Altrincham line for Old Trafford

💡 Top Tip: Arrive at Manchester Piccadilly 2-3 hours before kick-off. Explore Manchester city centre (Northern Quarter, Printworks), grab lunch, have drinks in the pubs, then catch the Metrolink tram to Old Trafford around 90 minutes before kick-off. The tram drops you directly at the ground – it couldn’t be easier!

🚗 BY CAR – Challenging But Possible

⚠️ Parking Warning: Parking around Old Trafford is challenging on matchdays, with most streets being residents-only. Official stadium car parks are for season ticket holders only and not available for away fans. Traffic congestion is severe on matchdays. The Metrolink tram is genuinely the better option unless you’re staying locally and parking at your hotel.

If You Must Drive:

  • Directions: M60 motorway, Junction 7 or 9, follow signs to Trafford/Old Trafford. Exit M602 at Junction 3 for A5081
  • Trafford Centre Car Parks: The Trafford Centre (shopping centre, 2 miles from stadium) has massive parking (£5-£8) – then Metrolink or bus to the ground
  • MediaCityUK: Parking available at MediaCityUK (£6-£10) – short Metrolink ride to Old Trafford
  • Private Parking: Local businesses and schools offer parking £10-£20 – book online in advance at parkopedia.co.uk or yourparkingspace.co.uk
  • Lancashire County Cricket Club: Sometimes offers matchday parking at Talbot Road (10-15 min walk) – check availability

🚨 Our Advice: Get the train to Manchester Piccadilly or Victoria, then take the Metrolink tram to Old Trafford. The tram runs every 6-12 minutes, takes 15-20 minutes, costs £3-£4, and drops you 2 minutes’ walk from the ground. Driving means dealing with traffic, expensive parking, and post-match congestion. The tram is brilliant!

🍺 PUBS & DRINKS NEAR OLD TRAFFORD

⚠️ IMPORTANT ADVICE: Pubs immediately around Old Trafford are generally United strongholds and may not welcome away colours, especially for high-profile fixtures. Exercise discretion with away colours near the ground.
